white ptaches all over my baby's skin!!!

My 8 month old ds has developed whites patches all over his stomach, back , arms and legs. I took him to the GP and was given a steriod cream to apply. Was told that it was a fungal infection.
I read up on it, and apparently common and may return. Im not too keen to apply the cream, does anyone has any suggestions...or experienced something similar.?

The cream will clear it up, probably in a few days. The alternatives are worse. My DH used wallpaper paste to clear a persistant fungal infection on his feet! Worry about reoccurence if it reoccurs and think about other options then. The cream is probably 1% clomatrizole and is 1/10 of the strength used for vaginal thrush.
