Hiatus Hernia

Does anyone have any experience of managing the symptoms caused by a hiatus hernia?

Mine was diagnosed by endoscopy this week following ongoing daily symptoms of nausea, bloating and discomfort in upper belly, acid reflux and indigestion - not resolved by a course of Ompeprazole.

I am slim, under 50 (44) and definitely not pregnant (early menopause 2 years ago).

I know HH are pretty common and often symptom-less, but presume this is the likely cause of my symptoms. I really don't want to take long term PPI type medication.

I think I eat a reasonably healthy vegetarian diet, never have more than one alcoholic drink and have already halved the amount of tea and coffee I was drinking. I haven't noticed any correlation between diet and good / bad days.

Does anyone have any tips or positive stories? I'm already at a point where I just wouldn't plan to go out for a meal for pleasure as I would most likely spoil it by feeling ill....

Thanks in advance!

You can have a repair op, keyhole. I had this at a private hospital through insurance. Feel so much better

Omeprazole didn't help me but Lansaprazole has been amazing.

Now I can even go out for a meal, which I would never have done before without it being ruined by knowing I'd probably have to sit up all night and be unable to sleep.

And I know what you mean about diet; my heartburn and bloating was so constant that I couldn't pinpoint any actual foods, which doctors always looked a bit disbelieving of.

Thank you.

I'm pretty sure I can't afford a private op, and also pretty sure that the NHS won't offer me one until I've tried all other options. Apparently it's a small HH but no signs of anything else wrong.
I guess I should go back to my GP and see what they suggest, medication or diet-wise. I wouldn't know what to change first in my diet - what do you all find causes the worst problems?

Drinking cold water is worst! And fizzy juice. Coffee, but I can't live without it.

Other than that I just generally produce too much acid so it didn't matter what I did, by the end of the day I was bloated, and would often wake up choking on my own stomach contents.
