Worried about lump in neck?

Igglepiggle88 · 15/02/2018 20:32

The other day I noticed I have a fairly large pea sized lump on the ride side of my neck, pretty much in the middle of my neck.
I’m now really freaking out and I can’t see my GP for 3 weeks. I had norovirus at Christmas and a cold at the start of the year but surely it would have gone down if that was the cause? It feels moveable and soft.. anyone have anything similar?

How strange.. I noticed mine yesterday! Where abouts is yours and how big etc is it? I wish I wasn’t a worrier!

About the size of a pea, soft and it moves like yours. Go to the doctors just to put your mind at ease.

Please go to the doctor and get it checked out. Do not be fobbed off. I don't want to be a voice of doom but I had a lump on my neck. Got fobbed off by doctors telling me it was viral for 5 months. Until a biopsy showed cancer. Following 6 months of chemo at the age of 21 I did fully recover but I urge all lumps to be checked out.

I’ve booked an appointment but they can’t get me in until the 5th March.
I’m sorry to hear that grumpy but I’m happy you made a recovery. How big was the lump you had if you don’t mind me asking? Did you have any other symptoms?

I had a lump on my neck a few years ago and was referred for biopsy. It turned out to be a thyroid nodule. I had to go back a couple of times to have a needle biopsy done. They were clear. After the last one it really swelled up (they were very vigorous in their scraping) but once the swelling went down it disappeared. I don't have any thyroid problems strangely enough.

So did it just turn out to be one of those things Fin and nothing sinister? How big was the lump that you had?

It started off pea sized and got slightly bigger. I was able to move it about. My mind was working overtime so I know what you are going through. I couldn't stop touching it either. Could you ask the surgery for a cancellation if one comes up? I'm a worrier too, it's horrible feeling.

Just remembered that my husband had a pea sized lump on his neck a while after me, his was slightly further back, kinda directly below his ear. I badgered him to get it seen to, he was referred and his was okay too.

Igglepiggle88 · 15/02/2018 23:27

That’s a good idea, I could ask to be put on the cancellation list and I also think if you ring early enough they sometimes do same day spaces.
How quickly did yours start to get bigger? I just spoke to mum and she reminded me I went about the same thing a few years ago, she seems to think they said it was slightly larger than normal but could have been caused by a spot I had on my neck at the time(?) and to keep an eye on it for 8 weeks.. which I clearly forgot about Confused do you think if that was 3-4 years ago and it was something it would have got a lot bigger by now?

Definitely get it checked out but just to reassure you, it is totally normal to have small pea-sized lumps in your neck in the form of lymph nodes (and there can be other reasons too which aren’t scary). I got into a total panic when I found mine and was told that some people’s are just more obvious than others, especially if you’ve been unwell and also if you are slim. I had an ultrasound and blood test in the end because I was still worried and it was confirmed to just be my lymph node.

So, do get it checked out to be on the safe side, but try not to panic. From what I understand, most of the time it’s nothing to worry about!

Mine got bigger over a few weeks, I think it got bigger due to fluid or maybe the prodding it got! By the time I went to GP it was visibly noticeable but only if I asked someone if they could see if, if you know what I mean. If you can get an appointment on the day by phoning first thing, do it, it would put your mind at rest.
