DS 2 has been in hospital the last 2 nights and has now been diagnosed with balantis and some other technical term that basicaly means his foreskin is too tight. The poor mite is in agony and the doctors have suggested this is the way to go. He is only 2 yrs old and i'm wondering if this really the best option for him. Anyone with any advice they could give?

I have no experiance at all, but I am pretty sure circumcision is a very simple operation - in adults they do in under local I believe, so it can't be that bad to have done.

there has been lots of debate about this subject in previous threads - try a search on circumcision.

A friend of mine had her ds done when he was about 4 as he had problems weeing. Some drs prefer to leave it, for a few yrs to see if things free up naturally

yes, both my sons were done, age c 3-5. v quick, didnt hurt a lot, only a tiny bit is removed, not a big deal at all.
No proven overall medical benefit either way (except the problems that your son has, of course).

I have looked after lots of little boys after their cricumcisions in the recovery room so I can only speak from that perspective. They are normally given a nerve block whilst under anaesthetic which numbs the whole area and means they are pain free. It seems to me that the thing that upsets them the most is the sight of their penis after the op. Obviously it doesn't look the same and sometimes is a bit bloody. At our hospital some surgeons stitch the wound (dissolvable) and others glue the wound.

Generally, if the LOs are well prepared for the op, they take it all in their stride.

I can't comment on whether this is the best option for him. Maybe other Mums here know of alternative treatments? Hope you get some more responses soon. And hope your DS starts to feel better soon.

I think personally I would wait until the balanitis has cleared up before making the decision. it's easy to feel pushed into something when your child is in pain and needs help.
as far as I'm aware there are other treatments for tight foreskin which may be worth looking into, however if he gets infection frequently then maybe it's best to have the op done while he is still quite little

Hi Mad my DS1 had frightful Balinitis when he was that age, it's really common. We decided to wait, and lo and behold once he was able to wiggle foreskin back (in the bath) the skin semed to 'loosen' and now he is problem free. Sorry if TMI HTH
