Wisdom teeth removal

I'm waiting for one of my teeth to be removed and the consultant wants me to have a ct scan before she does anything to check for nerve positions. This isn't normal is it? No one I know has had one for wisdom teeth. Anyone else had one?
I've also been given a choice between a local or a general anaesthetic. I'm leaning toward general even though the consultant said local would be better.

On a ct scan, you can check the position of the ID ( inferior dental) nerve, in relation to the wisdom tooth. This must be closely associated with the wisdom tooth on a xray you've already had to have been suggested to go for a ct scan.
As regards GA, they are more risky, a slower recovery, that's why you've been advised LA.

Thanks for the reassurance.

I listened to my iPod when I had mine out. It helped block out the noise & helped me relax a bit.

Not what you asked, but thought it might help if you're nervous!

I had local with sedation which wasn't as intense as ga but I remember nothing

It depends on how your teeth are sitting in the gum as to the type of procedure you need. Some wisdom teeth are fully erupted and will (almost) pop out. Wisdom teeth that are still in the bone and not sitting vertically need some major excavation to get them out - this is considered more than minor surgery.

The bothersome one is only partially erupted.
The iPod is a good idea but I worry about any vibrations still. I hate even a polish because of this.
I'm up to double figure for surgery so GA doesn't worry me. I'd it's going to be difficult due to the partial eruption, I may opt for that.
