Bashed finger 2 months ago - still lump where bruise was. What is it?

I was putting up a fence post at 6 months preggers and managed cleverly to hit finger with a club hammer. Hard.
It swelled up straight away till I put peas on it, since then has left a lump under the skin that hurts if pressed or knocked.
Anyone know what it is or if it will go away? Been ages!

Is it possible you could have broken your finger? I managed to do just that years ago by shutting my finger in the car door , it was lumpy and hurt for over a year afterwards, and it is still noticeably bigger than the same finger on the other hand and hurts if I put pressure on it.

Oh dear! Thankyou, well it had occurred to me but only briefly as I can still use the finger Ok, well perhaps I need to get it checked out then...did you know you'd broken yours straight away?

It sounds like maybe you bruised the bone? I have a few bits like this. It does sort itself out.

I'm pretty sure that a broken finger would have been unusable when you broke it ...

No, but when I went to the doc a few days later about something I explained about my finger, he looked at it and told me it was probably broken, but unless it was unbearably painful it was unnecessarily debilitating to splint it. I broke it by the top joint - if yours is further down, it might be different.

I got a 'bump' on my cheekbone and was left with a lump for months.
Went to the docs a couple of months after and he said that if the bones been damaged it overgrows to protect itself or something (sorry was a long time ago) and eventually it will correct itself.

I whacked my little toe against the wall really hard on Christmas day (I was 37 weeks pregnant at the time) and it still hurts now. Wondered if I might have broken or fractured it and thought I probably had as it's still very painful when pressed even slightly.

Mum2FunkyDude · 27/04/2007 19:05

it is more than likely a bit of cartilage that grew over the area that was damaged. Not to worry unless you don't have full use of it I would say.

I got hit in the shin with a wooden surf board on holiday last May and I still have a bump under the skin if I press it. So a lump on the bone sounds plausible as my leg definitely wasn't broken Blardy hurt though...

Thanks all - helpful stuff! I shan't worry too much then, it sounds like it could be just a botched repair job tbh it isn't too bad now, I can use it fine, just have to be careful not to knock it on anything - Roskva, it's actually the lower finger between knuckle and mid joint. So I prob. would have some trouble moving the upper bit I guess
