help re mmr/pnemo jabs and a lump.

is it normal for babies to have a lump where the needle/injection was put in?

J had it on monday and there's quite a hard lump on his leg the side the pnemo went in I think but cna't be 100% sure, he's walking etc all ok - should I jsut keep an eye on it? (he's never had this before.)

Yes this is normal both of my children had this after there injections

yes it is normal

if not done well, they stab the babe and shoot the stuff in really quickly to get it all over and done with fast, and it leaves a pea sized lump which can stay for months and months and months

a good nurse will inject much more slowly (but this will take a bit longer and child may therefore scream a bit more), but no lump

I'd rather have 5 seconds longer injection and no lump personally

well exactly - he's never had this b4 so I was a bit worried - we've just had a bath and the lump is actually well I can only describe it as going from half way on his thigh to his hip the whole area seems really swollen under teh skin - is that still ok?

oh that sounds different. more like a localised reaction - the ones mine had were more like a pea under the skin. or maybe like a kidney bean shrinkng to a pea after a bit but no more.

I know that's why i'm worried - had it of been a small pea sized type one I wouldn't bother. I think i'll keep an eye on it over the w/e and see how it goes - h/v apt is on tue - well open clinics so can pop in then or do you think it's worht going now? - i'm sure they'd just say it's cos of hte jab and i'd feel like a paranoid android!

well you know it is because of the jab, you just want to know if it is normal or not

can't you give your practice nurse (or whoever jabbed) a quick ring tomorrow and ask? they probablly don't need to see it if you describe it like you just have, unless they think it doesn't sound normal in which case go in

I wouldn't have thought an HV would have a clue actually, I'd want the nurse or a GP to tell me what was normal and what wasn't. and next tuesday is a bit of a way away

thanks PPH - I should be able to get in to see the nurse actually tomorrow. if it's not normal then obv something's wrong (also i'm prob over cautious about it being the mmr and all and apparently I worry to much according to mum - but hey i'm a mum what do you expect! )

My kids had the same as pph describes pea sized lumps where they had the injection, i would keep on eye on him & then maybe speak to a hv or gp?

yes I'd do that
even if there is nothing much to be done if it is an abnormal reaction they should know about it to notify it

munz-my ds had a lump that size ,not from the mmr but one of the earlier jabs.Eventually went with no residual effects,dr wasn't particularly worried about it at the time .
