Defeating GERD success stories!

I’m feeling rather negative about it all and really don’t want to feel like I’m stuck with this forever.
So please any positive stories or things that have helped you combat it. I’m currently on Omeprazole and going to make some drastic diet changes so any help with these would be greatly received.

My GERD just disappeared suddenly and it had been awful even on omeprazole I sometimes felt I had to sleep upright. But it would depend on the cause - I had no hiatus hernia or hpylori.

I found that after a while the omeprazole and ranitidine made it worse and when I came off for the endoscopy I did not know how I would survive - eating just made me feel so sick. However, once the reaction from coming off the drugs disappeared (your stomach over produces acid for a while) after about 2 weeks, I was fine and never used them again after the endoscopy. The difference is between like night and day. Even my GP said I would always suffer. I can honestly say I have not had even a hint of GERD for 6 months.

I have a hiatus hernia. Omeprazole made my symptoms worse. The main thing that has helped me is sleeping on an inclined bed - the whole thing needs to be sloped though, not just my torso! We started out by sticking blocks of wood under the feet at the head end and it worked so well we've permanently modified our bed. I have far less reflux now than when I sleep on the flat. :) Dietary changes have helped me a bit too.

Hmm I’ll definitely slope the bed then thanks. Do you get the feeling you’re filling up with acid gas? I feel like my heads going to explode 😭

I have suffered for a few years with this, it is a pressure feeling in my chest and constant burping, I have IBS and functional dyspepsia, had a gastroscopy and all was normal. I think it mainly oesophageal spasms. I am on full dose Ranitidine as Lansoprazole did nothing for it. The main thing that has helped was seeing a dietitian and working out the main causes and to my surprise along with wheat and fruit, I am very sensitive to milk, I have to avoid it in all food and check all labels and I have lactofree milk. Generally I am a LOT better than I was when it was constant and taking over my life, now i barely even think about it if I watch my diet.

Thanks I’ve not spoken to a dietitian yet I was going to have a go at altering things myself. I have found chocolate, dairy and other high fat foods bad so far

Low carb eating was the best solution for me - carbs are bad for GERD, my symptoms disappeared very quickly. Omeprazole is not the answer - just a sticking plaster over the symptoms, which return even worse when you stop taking it (as sufferingicecakes has mentioned). If you want to make diet changes, try cutting out bread, pasta, rice and potatoes and see if the symptoms improve.
