Sore throat or strep throat?

I had a viral type illness about 10 days ago and after the temperature and aches finished I developed a sore throat and laryngitis. I have been taking painkillers, resting voice, inhalations etc, sometimes bringing up gobs of phlegm, but its not getting any better.
How do I know if it needs antibiotic?
Help appreciated

If it was preceded by a viral type illness then it's most likely a viral sore throat. Even if it's a strep throat, antibiotics only shorten the duration of illness by a tiny amount, i.e. hours rather than days. Tonsillitis doesn't usually need antibiotics either, even if there is pus on the tonsils. As long as you are not very unwell and can swallow water/saliva then best just to ride it out with strepsils, night nurse, gargling salt water, etc.
