Smashed finger

Hi all,
At the beginning of September I managed to smash my index finger and a bit of the rest of my hand in a car door. It instantly started to swell. I put ice on it but since I didn't have access to ice in the first 30 minutes or so it swelled to the point I couldn't move it. Bending was impossible. My finger was smooth the skin was so tight. And the finger burned hot. I went to the ER and had an x-ray the next day (swelling wasn't going down). They said it wasn't broken and to continue icing it. Didn't recommend immobilizing it or anything. Told me to check with GP if it still bugged me. Well I went to my doctor at the end of October still having quite severe pain especially when I would knock it against something and it would pull my finger. The pain is centred right on the joint in the middle (not the tip and not closest to my palm). Anytime I pull or hit it the pain is intense on the opposite side of my thumb in the joint. My doctor said that there wasn't anything he could do and I would probably have the pain for life as he did something similar and has had pain in his fingers since. I don't think this is right. I'm wondering if the swelling was so bad the ER doctor couldn't see a fracture. But I feel like I shouldn't still be having such intense pain now. It's not constant but it surprises me when I, least suspecting it. To this day I still can't fully bring that finger down to make a fist. And if I try to force it I get pain. I'm in my early 30s. Any ideas of what I should do?
