Sure I've broke my big toe

I kicked something and hit my big toe. It's throbbing and sore. I can't bend it and can't walk on it properly without limping.

I rang 111 and they advised me to go to A&E but I don't want to waste time for a broken big toe. I've iced it and just keeping off it.

It's not blue or black as of yet.

Should I go and get it checked for piece of mind or is there nothing I can do anyways. Don't want to waste me time or the NHS???

I think I broke one of my toes yesterday too, bloody stubbing it. Mine turned totally purple . It’s stilk really painful as. I’m hobbling around like an idiot . But I’m not going to a&e or anything as afaik they can’t do anything with a broken toe anyway, but happy to be told otherwise . I sympathise though it hurts like a bastard

The can't do anything for normal toes, (if it's a straight break) but you need to be seen if it's a big toe

Think they actually do something for broken big toes so advice re a&e is reasonable. Take paracetamol and ibuprofen. Hope you get it sorted

teaiseverything · 23/12/2017 18:36

If you're concerned, I'd get an out of hours GP appointment through 111 rather than go to A&E. However, I broke all my toes on one foot and the GP just recommended taping and rest with elevation until the worst had settled down. Years on and no problems.

Rubyritz · 23/12/2017 18:55

it does say to go if your foots cold but my foot is always cold as it is. Don't no wether to go now or tomorrow being Christmas Eve. Hmm

Broke my big toe kicking something once, went a&e and there was diddly squat they could do - keep it elevated and ice, take some ibuprofen for pain and swelling :0)

OhCarbyDay · 23/12/2017 21:22

I broke mine kicking DD2. (Not deliberately!!!)
Left it a few days. Then went to A&E cos my foot was purple. The confirmed a bit of a crack but didn’t do anything except advise painkillers, elevate, supportive shoes etc.
Hurt like a bastard for weeks.
However. They did say they like to check it’s not dislocated or displaced. So get it checked.

YoI spoke to a medical advice service and they told you to get medic help. Why not listen to them? A broken big toe can have serious effects on your balance and mobility if not treated correctly. It's true that there is limited treatment advised for straightforward breaks in the other toes but breaking the big toe needs medical attention. Also if you suspect a more complicated fracture or dislocation of a lesser toe.
Please go get the medical attention that the phone service advised.

Oh and for those suffering with self-diagnosed broken lesser toes, you should see if you can get a special rigid-sole shoe in your pharmacy - they make a huge difference in being able to walk a little without agony. Bitter voice of experience...
