Advice about thumb (Do not click if squeamish!

I cut my thumb on Tuesday. (New carving knife in drawer, stupid). Cut in a "c" shape over knuckle. Not deep but bleed loads. DH patched me up. Have changed dressing everyday but now have a big lump of dried blood in cut. Should I try and clean it or leave it.

I probably should have gone to minor injuries but I didn't.

I did similar a few years ago. I just have a little scar now. If you want it to heal merlu then don't unpick the flap of skin! If the skin isn't hot and red and there is no pus I would keep doing what you are doing. You could put a bit of germoline or savlon on it till it heals.

Thanks badg. Glad you Mrs healed well. It was DH who kept trying to get me to minor injuries. I wasn't sure what they would over and above dressing it. Will that big bit of dried blood get in the way of healing do you think? It's a right pain to be honest, you need your thumb for everything!!

Mine looked like that for a while and in the end the blood just sort of disappeared over time, not sure how! I think the problem is if you peel it back now the skin flap won't reattach and you will just be left with scar tissue instead, which will not look as nice. If you keep it covered and don't let it dry out it'll look best long term I think.

I'm about a week ahead of you with a thumb cut (scissors in handbag) and it looked a bit the same a week ago but has now settled down. I did think it was getting infected as it got a bit hot and red but cleaned with antiseptic wipes and it settled. As long as it doesn't get infected it should be fine.

Oh that looks like it's healing nicely. I needed to buy more dressing and The pharmacist told me to rest it because it will keep opening up but you need your thumb for everything! So annoying.

Right thumbs in both cases too! Yes very annoying at this time of year. Lemon and orange juice stung like hell too.

The dried blood will just reabsorb..leave well alone, it looks like it is healing nicely. If it gets more painful or if you notice redness in the surrounding skin that wasnt red before then go and see a doctor. Also be careful with banging it as its easy to whack your hands into things and that might reinjure it
