When do they operate on gynae prolapse?

I was wondering when they would normally do surgery for a rectocele (when the bowel has prolapsed into the vagina), I have an appointment coming up and really want them to do the surgery as it affects my life going to the toilet, sex, aching etc it isn't a huge prolapse but it affects me.
What do you think? What should I say?

If they have referred you, it's likely that surgery is an option otherwise the referral is a waste of time. You need to be honest with the gynae about how it's affecting you.

There may be other options to surgery. The mesh used for repair has been having bad publicity recently. Ask for all of your options written down clearly.

The mesh isn't always used each time. I had a 'simple' repair which was just stitches and got a good result from that.

I had a rectocele repair about 6 years ago in my early 60s. The surgeon specifically said he would not (ever) use mesh. It's been a success, though not problem free. OP, I'm happy to answer questions by PM. Not shy, just bored with putting details on MN!

They usually do Posterior Colporrhaphy which does not need mesh. I think things like that only get involved if it fails and the tissues are weak.

Usually you need to sort out any constipation issues (movicol helps to get you started) and see a gynae physio to makes sure if everything working or not. Sometimes this helps and you don't need an op. You may need defaecating pictograms to make sure where the problems lie.

I had mine done on insurance, and the surgeon was quite happy to do it straight away, even though it was small.

It did not solve to poo problems and often doesn't. But learning to sort out the constipation problems was very helpful. It comes with a perineum rebuild which I was very happy to have back .
