All I can hear is this awful hacking cough...

coming over the monitor from DD's room. She is 14 months and has had a runny nose for a few days but this cough has come out of nowhere and it keeps waking her.

She has had paracetemol, Tixylix isn't helping so she had some warm honey and lemon before bed which seemed to help a bit but she keeps waking up and then bursting into hysterical tears as she can't get back to sleep.

She has no fever and seems fine apart from this...any ideas?

If there's a chemist open locally go and buy some Medised. Has paracetamol and an anti-histamine in - stops my DD coughing asit dries up her runny nose really well. Failing that, some Vicks Vapour rub on her chest and throat.

HTH

It is medised she is on right now, unfortunately!
Shall try the Vick's next time she wakes up....

Any chance it could be croup? If so, or anyway, you could try putting a wet towel on a radiator in her room (if there is one) or if you have a humidifier, use that.

Horrid hearing them cough, poor love, hope she gets better soon.

Mine have been terrible coughers in their time and its horrible to hear on the monitor but sometimes I think the echo of the monitor makes it sound worse than it is. I have found the benolin coughs and cold much more effective than medised or tixilix. Also a basin of boiling water by side of cot really good too.

How would I know if it is croup? will try a basin of water as her radiator isn't coming on in this heat. Anything to stop her, she is being so good and getting herself back to sleep and I know if I go in she will wake up completely but I want to give her a cuddle

A croup cough is a distinctive bark like cough.
