DD (6) complaining of a headache?

DD has been complaining of a sore head since last night. She's quite clear that she hasn't banged it or bumped it and that it hurts inside. She's eating and sleeping fine and doesn't really have any other symptoms except my gut feeling that she's not quite 100%. She just gets this look about her and a bit more tearful than usual but nothing I can really put my finger on. To be honest I would probably ignore it completely and wait to see if it turned into anything except for the fact that a headache is such an unusual symptom in a child. Any thoughts?

Could she be a bit dehydrated?

My ds2 always had a headache when he was coming down with a virus - from the age when he could tell me - about 2. It sounds like the beginning of a virus. I would give some calpol and lots of warm drinks and put her to bed early. She must be feeling rotten.

Keep an eye on her so that you can spot anything important like a rash.

The dehydrated thing would make sense except I'm sure she's had at least several glasses of water in the last couple of days plus her usual milk at night. She could be coming down with something - that would explain that "not quite right" feeling - although when you ask her she says she is fine just her head hurts. And she seems to be running around and playing as normal. Am keeping a close eye out for fever and rashes but I just thought kids didnt' get headaches.

Still complaining but no fever or any other symptoms have appeared. Do you think it's worth getting her eyes checked?

Yes. Any other symptoms? Where is the headache? Front, back, all over? Does the light bother her? Can she see ok? how old is she?

Sugarmagnolia · 21/04/2007 19:19

I thought maybe she was coming down with something but nothing has appeared and she's adament her head still hurts - "inside" is the best she can tell me, although I guess nearer the front as she keeps pointing to her forehead. Light doesn't seem to bother her, she doesn't have a fever or seem especially tired. She's 6 and had her eyes tested about a year ago but with a strong family history of short-sightedness I'm wondering if it's worth doing again. But she was also very clear that it hurts first thing in the morning so if it was her eyes you would think it would be better after resting/sleeping...?

could it be her teeth?

Sugarmagnolia · 21/04/2007 19:22

maayyybbeee - could molars coming in give you a headache?

In the absence of obvious virus etc, I would get her eyes checked and if it persists see GP. Hope she gets better soon.

thanks 3littlefrogs
