Stiff and painful shoulder/arm - will it get better on its own?

It started off as a pain across the top of my shoulders and neck. The next day it moved into one shoulder. Then down the upper arm as well. For two days it was so painful I could hardly use it, and dosed myself up to maximum on paracetamol and ibuprofen. Couldn't sleep at night for the pain.

Managed a night's sleep after massive dosing of wine last night. Now it's really stiffened up but isn't quite as painful as before.

Anyone know what this is and do I need to go to the doctor or will he just tell me to rest it?

TIA

Poor you
Could it be frozen shoulder?
I would see your GP.

I had this a few weeks ago, i was in agony with it and couldn't get out of bed to bf my son, I had to wake my husband up to get him- lol! It stayed really painful for about 4 days I think, then disappeared as fast as it came. Hope this happens for you too.

Bizarrely my mother suffered with something similar recently and was told by a practice nurse that is was frozen shoulder which is a serious condition which can last for around 3 years, so hope you don't have that! GP has diagnosed her with deep muscle damage I think, and referred her for physio, so if it doesn't clear up def see your GP.

Yeah, physio can help with this. Take maxdose iboprofen all day and night, if there's no reason not to - it actually helps with the inflammation. You might want to consider getting physio anyway to try to fix whatever caused this?

Thanks for your replies. It was very stiff yesterday but not throbbing continuously like it had been the day before. By the end of the day it was very sore. But I managed a slightly uncomfortable night's sleep without wine and it feels much better this morning.

It's still stiff and a little sore but markedly better. If it flares up again I will go to GP.

It feels so odd to have such severe pain when you can't even remember knocking it or overstretching or anything.
