Wisdom Tooth Gone But...

...the anaesthetic is wearing off and HOLY FUCK it hurts. Have taken paracetamol and ibuprofen as per dentist’s advice and so far it’s not touching it. Anyone got any tips? I’m tempted to try a hot water bottle but don’t want to risk starting it bleeding again. Any dentists out there, or self-help advice? In actual agony here.... Sad

I had mine out on Monday. Good god the pain when the anaesthetic wore off. Sad

It was a complicated extraction and I needed to have my gum cut, the tooth drilled and cut up to be removed as it was half buried in the gum.

Buy paracetamol and codeine or nurofen plus which contains codeine. The codeine makes it alot more bearable and helps you sleep.

Thanks - I’ll send DH out for some heavy duty painkillers.

Also watch anything cold. Cold drinks, ice cream, ice lollies, etc are absolute hell when they come into contact with the wound.

Heat doesnt bother it much and in fact the hot salt water rinses you can start after 24 hours hurt a little but then make it feel better after.

Can’t wait for the warm salt rinse - I remember that helping a lot last time I had a tooth out. Don’t remember it being this painful to begin with though.

DH has had a rummage in his personal pharmacy kit and found me some paracetamol with codeine. Trouble is - I have to wait a few hours now to take it because I haven’t long taken the regular paracetamol.

Have you only had paracetamol?

You can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together. So if you've only had paracetamol, take some ibuprofen.

They sell a double tablet called Nuromol which has 500mg of paracetamol and 200mg of ibuprofen together in one tablet. So by that logic it is safe to take the individual tablets together.

Usernom1234567890 · 15/11/2017 20:09

You can take ibuprofen up to 2400mg over 24hrs for a (short)3 day period, along with 4g paracetamol over 24hrs.
So that's 8 doses of analgesia in 24 hrs. 600mg ibuprofen 4x day plus 1000mg paracetamol 4x day.
Remember to always eat (yoghurt ideal) especially before ibuprofen.
Best to alternate the above every 3 hrs rather than taking together.
Avoid the hot water bottle, that will dilate the blood vessels and exacerbate any potential post op swelling.
Start the gentle Warm salt water mouthwashes after 24 hrs passed. Do this for a week (about 6 mugs of it per day) & always after eating.
Avoid rice -awful to get out the socket.
Good luck

Yes I’ve taken ibuprofen as well. It’s starting to do something now I think. Still hurts like fuck but I no longer want to claw my own head off to stop the pain.

Only another hour until I can take the crazy-arse strong paracetamol/codeine from DH’s back pain stash.

Damn though - forgot about needing to eat with ibuprofen. That might be why I was starting to feel a bit sick.

Have pinched some of DD’s Petit Filous. Will get some proper yogurt in the morning.

I took diclofenac after I had my wisdom teeth out. It seemed to be more effective than co-codamol.

NamasteNiki · 15/11/2017 21:36

Im holding out for bedtime for the codeine. It makes you sleepy

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 16/11/2017 07:31

Codeine worked really well. It still hurts but managed a few hours’ sleep.

Thanks for all the advice - esp. about eating with ibuprofen. Had totally forgotten that and might have been throwing up all night on top of everything!

Ibuprofen doesnt bother me. I take it with no food all the time.

72 hours afterwards I have woken up feeling much better. I can open my mouth wider but still need pain relief.
I hsd 2 teeth out and one was a very compliacted extraction.

Fingers cross you make progress as quick.
