My 9 month old has had gastroenterites from Tuesday night/Wed am and finally after it getting no better we took him back to the doctor yesterday am. He advised to keep him on water for 24 hours to clear it out his system which we did and he took about 16floz yesterday and it seemed to clear up the diarrhoea bit and he's stopped being sick. So then today he's had about 22 floz fluid already (diluted formula) and a couple of bowls of babyrice.

He slept surprisingly from 6.30pm last night to 4.30am even though he'd only had water, so I re-settled with a bottle of water, 6.15 the same. He woke at 7.20. Since then he's slept for about 4/5 hours and can't seem to stay awake. He's lying next to me on our carpet just plonked out. He hasn't slept this much during these last few days which have been horrendous, but I suspect he almost felt too ill to sleep. Is this just that the illness has finally got the better of him and he's sleeping it out ?? Should I be worried? Will he sleep tonight if he's slept all day ? Bit worried as I return to work in the morning, first day back - great !!
Any advice !

My DD has similar last year when she was the same ish age-and she was very sleepy for a few days as she was recovering-all the vomiting etc takes it out of them I think..plus she is flaked out now as its so hot-so if the weather is nice where you are that might also be a factor? He is probably feeling a bit weak from the illness and the lack of food-but if he is drinking ok I wouldnt be too too worried I dont think, (obviously without having seen him I cant really say though)

Plus it doesnt neccessarily follow that if they sleep alot in the day they wont sleep at night-in fact with DD its often the days she is awake all day that she sleeps worst and vice versa..

I would give NHS direct a call-or your GP if they have an out of hours service as they might be able to give you phone advice and will come out if they are concerned...

Hope he feels better soon-and Good luck on your first day back tomorrow!

It is hot here....he seems to have a slight burst of activity and then that's it - he was trying to crawl upstairs after I'd changed his nappy and he's usually super speedy - he was a bit like a new calf just born !!!....it is warm here today, yes. I might give NHS direct a call though just to stop me worrying...

My DD did the same when she had gastroenteritis as a baby.
