Is it better to starve this viral gastro bug or to feed - 9 month old

DS started vomiting Tuesday night/Wed morning - first time he's ever had this type of bug. He starts nursery on Monday and I go back to work - great !

Anyway, every time he sees his water beaker, he goes ballistic, but when I give it to him, he gulps it really quickly and won't let go. He didn't vomit at all yesterday but did at lunchtime today when he got so hysterical, he gulped his water then threw it all up.

Don't know how to give him the water in sips - don't know how to stop his hysterics. We've seen the doctor who has diagnosed this horrid virus and just said keep him hydrated -otherwise he apparently looked ok.

Any practical tips from you wise mnetters to a first time mum !! The washing machine has been on constantly (oh and now I have it too !- great !).

We have just come out of hospital with DD2 having this, she is 4 months.
Have you tried him on diaralyte ?
The idea of giving him small amounts is so the tummy manages it alot easier - if it fills up to quickly with the bug it just rejects whatever is in there and he will throw it all up.
Doc at hosp recommended 30ml of Diaralyte every hour - this started on Tuesday and DD2 started back on her milk yesterday.

HTH and for your DS, it's so horrible when they are so small and you can't reassure them it'll all be OK

Oh dear, what great timing!

I would suggest you let him have a bottle, at least that way he can't gulp the water down so fast. Also, get some Diarolyte (sp?) from your chemist and see if he will drink it.

Any form of liquid will do tbh - diluted juice, quarter strength formula or just carry on breast-feeding if that's what you are doing.

Hope he gets better soon!

The best way of ensuring a child does not gulp too much liquid down in one go is to give them a bottle/cup with only a tiny amount of liquid in at any one time. Do this often and after a bit they won't be feeling quite so thirsty and desperate for lots of fluid in one go.
