Worried DD 10 Months eating & drinking very little

DD has had chickenpox started nearly 3 weeks ago, a few scabs to go still has red spot marks(no blisters) on body. Saturday morning she was sick, then appeared fine didn't eat much drank ok. Wasn't sick again until late Saturday night & then early hours of Sunday morning. Temp at that point was 38. We where away from home & came home very early Sunday morning. She appeared brighter on Sunday drank well, didn't eat much. Gave her milk during Sunday night/early hours Monday morning & she ate & drank much better yesterday. She appears to be ok, no temp, hasn't ate or drank much today. Gave her some lamb casserole(her fav) mid afternoon, some wholemeal bread & 2 ozs milk. She burped & was sick. Phoned Doctor only to be told by the Receptionist they have no appointments today or tomorrow. Despite me telling her the above, she said probably a virus! I asked to be put on the list for the Dr to call. Do you think I am worrying unnecessarily?

you know your child!
Keep her temp down with paracetamol and bufren
offer her drinks.
Food not too important for a day or 2, but offer it.
Do you feel like eating when you are under the weather?

Thanks 'auntymandy' my gut feeling is things are not right. Your right I can't eat when I am under the weather. The bleeden receptionist wound me up with her matter of fact comment its only a virus. It probably is but shes only 10 months old & has been through enough with chickenpox. I am glad I called the Dr's & await a call from the Dr, which won't be until after the evening surgery.

EHM, my DD is going through sickness bug. I suspect yours is not related to the pox but i am not a Dr.

Best advice i can give is no food for 4 hours after being sick. Then sips of water. If that stays down then small amount of food at 6 hours. Stick to rice cakes, apples, toast. If still not sick then small amount of food 2 hours after that ie 8hours after being sick. Repeat for about 48 hours by which time they'll hopefully be ok.

I always do this with my DD, my DH and myself and it seems to work ok.

Just to reassure you - my DS had a bad cold and cough (started about 10 days ago) and he barely drank any milk (or ate anything, but he doesn't anyway) for 2 days and then started drinking his milk but kept puking the whole lot up for at least another 4 days - so pretty much 6 days with hardly any food - he did lose weight (I could start to feel his ribs) but he has been drinking tons of milk for the past 3 days and eating little bits too and his ribs have disappeared again!

So, what I am trying to say is try not to worry as a few days without food doesn't do any harm although it is VERY worrying and when they do start eating again, they soon get back to where they were.

HTH

EHM I'd offer the same advice and reassurances as others here have already. You know your baby and no doctor is going to mind you asking their advice if you are worried. Hope she's soon better {{{hugs}}} for you and her x x

My doctor recommended giving my daughter flat coke when she wasn't taking any food. He said the sugar would keep her going.

Thanks Everybody for your comments. GP called he said we where best to call. As she is eating little & taking small amounts & has only been sick once(this afternoon) since early hours of sunday morning he isn't overly concerned. If she decides to take no fuilds at all or, and developes a temp we must call. If we have any other concerns we must call. He advised following illness such as chickenpox, and then upset tummy it can take upto 2 weeks for appetite to return fully.
