if so have you had any unpleasant side effects such as weight gain or a worsening of PMT symptoms or depression?

i had one fitted a few days ago but didnt realise these were possible side effects till i read the patient info leaflet afterwards, now im wondering if id have been better off getting the copper coil again.

any advice/experiences would be appreciated.thanks.

There are loads of threads on here about it.
I had min removed, as I put on weight and couldn't shift it.
I have lost 5lbs since having it out.
I also developed worse acne/ greasy hair/ sweating.
HAd no periods tjhough which was nice.

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 16:30

same here re hair and acne and sweating.
am thinking about getting some kind of contraceptive sorted out now (dd2 is 7 months old) but not sure what as cannot have pills, injections don't work for me and condoms are real passion-killers.

Bamzooki · 08/04/2007 16:39

I have had mine for 3.5 years now and for me it has been trouble free. I have not lost all pg weight from ds, but that is prob more to do with eating all the pies tbh .
And the lack of/minimal periods has been bliss cos AF was soo heavy after ds was born. Can't see any reason not to have another one fitted when this one runs out anyway. But like many contraception methods, just doesn't suit everyone, but I guess only time will tell for you.

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 16:45

the no periods aspect was great, i must admit, and i have considered having another one for that reason, but don't like the other side effects.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 08/04/2007 16:48

dh has said I am a nicer person since having mine removed and my hair doesn't seem to be fallng out as much
not sure about the weight gain as I don't seem to be losing but then I haven't really been trying to!
It did take over 2 years for these syptoms to develop though

dd3 is only 4 weeks old but i wanted to get something sorted asap.i have had 3 IUD's in the past but with the last one i had 10 day long periods and bleeding in between as well,so i was advised to try the mirena this time.they told me that there are no side effects apart from periods may stop or get lighter,as the hormone is released locally and very little gets into your bloodstream,so i was a bit peeved when i read the leaflet.

i put on loads of weight with the pill and the contraceptive injection and if id known it could happen with this coil i would have taken my chances with another copper one,cos i put on weight really easily and i hate being overweight,to the point where i wouldnt need contraception cos i wouldnt feel like 'doing' anything

I had mine out a couple of months ago after 8 months. I felt myself sliding into depression, very unlike me. I was moody, agressive and felt flat and joyless. I feel SO much better now. Am contemplating non-hormonal one, but worried about heavy periods.

divastrop · 08/04/2007 17:01

the second copper coil i had was fine,my periods were very slightly heavier but that was it.

i am not liking the sound of this,as i had Ante-natal depression and have had PND in the past, which was made worse by the injection, and i refused any form of hormonal contraception afterb that, untill now.

maybe i should warn dp in advance...

took a few weeks for the bleeding to settle down, but now, almost 18 months later, it is great, have not had periods for almost a year, no depression ( and i am prone to it ) and no PMT syptmoms except for a sudden yearning for carbs and chocolate the day before i am due on....period might be a day of light spotting/ bleeding...
worked really well for me !

Celery · 08/04/2007 17:04

See how you go, you might be fine. I had mine out at the family planning clinic. I couldn't face my GP trying to talk me out of having it out. The FPC took it out straight away, no questions asked. Didn't hurt. I really must go and have normal one put in.

McCadburysDreamyegg · 08/04/2007 17:07

I have had one since September and have had no periods and no side effects.

madoldcatlady · 08/04/2007 17:59

If you are sensitive to progesterone based contraception (some pills & depo injection) I would put money on the mirena not being suitable for you. The docs tell you about the miniscule amount of hormones in the mirena, but if it doesn't agree with you you'll get the lousy side effects to a lesser or greater degree.

divastrop · 08/04/2007 21:29

thank you for all your replies

lulu-did u get PMT before you had the coil?im asking because before i had dd2 i used to get really bad symptoms from ovulation to the start of af,so bad i basically only had a life for 2 weeks a month.

when i was on the pill it was the combined one,and that was many years ago before i had children.

i suppose i will just ahve to see how it goes.

sorry for late reply diva

i did on the pill, for sure...tried all different ones...,my mood swings were all over the place....shouting , crying, unreasonable, argumentative......terrible really....

in fact DH mentioned a few months into me having the coil he had noticed a massive difference...

so, i think if it works for you, sorts out the PMT, no periods and is excellent, effective contraception, whats not to like !! and nothing to do for 5 years !

divastrop · 09/04/2007 11:47

thanks lulumama.

im getting spotting now,is that normal??it was fitted on thursday.i dont think i properly listened to the family planning doc,i was just saying 'please give me contraception before my dp holds my hand and gets me pregnant again'.

spotting sounds normal. it can be unsettled for a few weeks, even a couple of months before it settles down properly.i loved mine!

lulumama · 09/04/2007 13:12

welcome diva !

spotting is absolutely normal, when i had my coil , there was a booklet with it, with a calendar on the back , and different symbols to mark on it to show spotting or bleeding or none at all...which i filled in, settled down after 3 months or so, and periods started to lighten very quickly
