Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening?

Is this new? DH is 65 and has been invited

I'd not heard of it before has anyone had it done? What would make you higher risk for it?

Been a man and been 65 or over makes you higher risk so screening now offered to men at 65. Quick ultrasound. Good to be screened as most TripleAs happen so quickly you die before getting to hospital when they rupture.

It is a routine screening programme in England for men 65 & over. NHS patient info here

No, it's routine population screening for large 'at risk' populations, like smear tests and mammograms.

I read your link - the prevention seems to be don't drink/smoke and exercise lots - he is the fittest 65 I know (apart from the chronic lung disease!) Never smoked, doesn't drink and plays tennis 4-5 times a week

So I reckon he's a good risk!

98% of men have a negative screening.

It's a simple, quick, and painless ultrasound scan. He might be low risk and have a normal scan but AAA screening saves lives.

DH had this done last year at 49. He was having his gallstones scanned and I mentioned to the sonographer that his Dad had died of a Triple A so she did a quick scan in his groin and gave him the thumbs up! He'll now get called back at 55 I think because of a family history.

He was fine

It's a one off screening, that's if everything is normal. It's saving lives, encourage your DH to go.

He had it at 12 he is all clear
