Mouth ulcer

Good morning,

I have a mouth ulcer I get every month (usually luteal phase) and they are so painful to the point where it’s hard to move my mouth. They always occur at the bottom of my inside bottom lip and always last two weeks.

I clean my teeth properly and use antibacterial mouthwash but I think it’s hormonal given they appear at the same time of a month. Is there anything I can do? I’ve looked online but the only advice is how to treat them NOT how to prevent hormonal changes causing this.

Change your toothpaste for a start.

Oogle · 20/09/2017 08:47

I changed my toothpaste and it didn't make a single bit of difference. I'm plagued with them almost constantly. I have changed diet, etc and still no difference. I've just had a blood test to rule out anything nasty but the GP is stumped. I get maybe 1 week a month where I am completely clear of ulcers. It's beginning to ruin my life (which I am aware sounds dramatic but the pain is indescribable)

@Footle I have tried using a milder toothpaste, herbal toothpaste and a dentist prescribed toothpaste. It’s a hormonal problem rather than hygiene and I wondered if anyone knew a way to stop it happening.

Thank you both for your input. Sorry yours are so bad @Oogle I’ll not complain xx

Complain away! It's hell isn't it?!

Have you tried taking folic acid? My DH reminded me a few minutes ago that I didn't once moan about ulcers when pregnant. It's true, I didn't suffer from one ulcer when pregnant so I'm going to try taking folic acid.

upsydaisies · 20/09/2017 10:08

I already take folic acid because we are ttc so I don’t think that would work for me. I don’t remember having any whilst pregnant either. It’s literally been the last year that I’ve been getting them monthly. My dentist and gp said it’s just one of those things and he can put me on contraception but that’s not what we want right now 😆

Ah whereas I've been wondering if mine are caused by contraception! Good luck with TTC. Has your GP done a blood test just to rule out anything like thyroid or low iron?

GummyGoddess · 20/09/2017 14:30

Have you tried an sls free toothpaste or just tried different sls ones? I have tooth powder because it's the only thing that stopped the ulcers coming. I get one maybe twice a year now.

upsydaisies · 20/09/2017 22:38

I’ll look into the sls tomorrow thank you @GummyGoddess and @Oogle I’ve been tested for everything over the last two and a bit years ttc so my levels of everything were ok at last check. They have questioned how my hormones are unstable and are looking into that as a cause of secondary infertility.

Chlorhexadine mouthwash will help it to clear up quicker but can cause teeth to stain if used daily.
