Can I ask anyone who has/has had a Mirena Coil . . .

Does it hurt when it's put in?

Can you feel it once it's there?

I'm told it makes the body think it's pregnant - did you feel pregnant in any way? Did the hormone thing affect you in any way?

Sorry for my noseyness, I've just told the dr I'd like one and have a few questions. Thanks for your help xxx

Have only had mine a month or 2
Yes it hurt when put in but no more than eg a smear
No, cannot feel it
Don't feel pg, the hormoe effect as I understand it is very localised

You do have (I have) spotting for weeks tho - not sure how long this goes on but it's a pain!

right- when its put it it can range from uncomfortable to painful- just take paracetamol before you go and you should be fine

as for the hormone effects i had none- perfect contraception for me!

Slight pain when put in - bit like bad period cramps so take something before you go.And now - no periods, no babies, no PMT - it's fab!

In my experience it did hurt when I had it put in the first time round. But when I needed a replacement I told the doctor that it had really hurt and she used local anasthetic (lignocaine) injected into the cervix. I was as worried about having the injection but it was fine felt odd but not painful.

You can't feel it when it's in apart from when you have to check the threads (recommended after a period) or if your lucky like me your periods will stop then you just check it now and again.

I think it made me put on weight but then I blame everything for this ( maybe I should just stop eating lol)

I got on with it fairly well but do ask for local.

thanks for your responses.

i heard someone say that it made them feel sick like in early pregnancy - anyone felt that?

agree, having it put in was uncomfortable, ached a bit after but was ok after that and I didn't know it was there after that.

I did get fortnightly light periods for about 6 months before it settled though, I don't think everyone does though. (Mine may have been different though because it migrated through the uterus wall and ended up in the pelvic cavity within those first 6 months.) Would perhaps suggest trying harder than I did to check your own threads for that reason

i have just had a baby and am breast feeding so doubt i'll get a period before it goes in. the dr said i'd be unlikely to have a period at all if i had one put in.

There's a long thread on the Health topic called Merina Coil. Lots of negative posts (by Lubielou etc) so might be an idea to read it before committing yourself?

I've had one for almost three years. It was a bit uncomfortable when put in - a bit worse than a smear - but take paracetemol beforehand and it shouldn't be too bad. Can't tell it's in there and haven't had any bad effects from the hormones. I've never had any periods/spotting in all the time I've used it which is a huge bonus. We'd talked about DH having the snip but I'd rather stick with Mirena because of the lack of periods. I totally recommend it.

No - lost weight despite Mirena but I was into my Weightwatchers campaign . Had mine put in approx 8 months ago after had recovered from birth of 2nd baby and felt nowt. Had the spotting for a couple of months but a small 'fairy-hammock' was enough to keep me fresh! Loving it all round really - have very light period monthly but no cramps whereas I used to really suffer. Nothing hormonal and don't feel constantly broody or owt. I never check threads though - oops - too squeamish...

Had one in for 4 years, haven't put on any weight, don't have periods, rarely get PMT, stopped my 6 weeks on, 2 weeks off bleeding. Bloody marvellous. It is uncomfortable having it put in, more so than a smear, but nothing like childbirth. Altho' my SIL had a bad reaction to hers and they whipped it out the next day, but it was almost immediately after they put it in.

thanks for that. I ask about the weight thing becasue, when I'm pregnant is the only time I am ever able to loose weight (something about the pg hormones making me not want to eat) so I was wondering if the coil introduces hormones into your systenm to make it think it's pregnant, will I loose my ravenous appetite and start feeling good again? That, on top of not havinbg to panic every month becasue we forgot to use a condom and the extreme pain notbeing a monthly feature too, would make this ideal.

hey cadbury, ive had mine for about 2 years now and its fab

It hurt like hell when I had it put in and was like early labour pains for a while, but after a couple of days the discomfort settled down.

I have no periods now, never felt pregnant with it, and have lost a stone in weight (although whether this is anything to do with the coil i dont know)

Cadbury - there's been a LOT of talk about this on here over the last couple of years. I know some people love it and others have had some very bad experiences on it - you might want to search the archives.

I had mine taken out after a couple of months, I didn't like it. And yes, it hurst going in.

I loved mine, but please Do check the cords. I lost mine after a smear (slipped into my cervix) and I got it lodged in my cervix - and got pg!
Its not foolproof but I loved having it and would have another one if dh hadnt had the snip!

I'm on my second and love it. Haven't had a period for 5 years, what can be better than that?

I'd say it was 'uncomfortable' going in. Take painkillers 1/2 hour before and you'll be fine. It's no worse than a smear really and the benefits are definately worth any 5 minute discomfort.

The hormone is such a small dose and is straight into the womb, it doesn't really travel round the body like say the pill.

I have had mine for almost 5 years, so due a replacement soon. Not painful going in, crampy pains for a couple of hours afterwards. Very light spotting virtaully continually for several months, thereafter very light spotting each month-hardly enough to notice. No weight gain either, but other medical issues govern that in my case. As others have said, an ideal contraception if it suits you-certainly worth a try.

Please search the mumsnet archives for other mirena threads (pardon the pun!) Lots of women have posted many negative things about it on here. Me included.

I found insertion more painful than natural childbirth. I almost passed out and was shaking for hours afterwards. In the 5 years I had mine in I gained a stone (some gain much more) has awful skin problems, joint pains, mood swings, sore boobs, depression, you name it I had it. When I took it out, after much research, all my symptoms went, and the stone of weight, within 2 weeks!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Be aware it doesn't suit everyone. If it suits you thats fab. But beware!
