Sore hip

The outside of my left hip has been sore for over a year now. Movement is fine but it's sore to lie on and is tender. It also aches when I'm tired and I sometimes need to take a painkiller. I've been to the doctor and also had an MRI as he thought it could be bursitis. The scan didn't show any inflammation of the bursa though so that was ruled out. Also tried some physio but exercises didn't really seem to help. Just not sure what it could be. Any ideas?!

i have hip impingement (femeroacetabular impingement) which was diagnosed by xray, then had MRI (with contrast) to diagnose labral tear.

maybe have a googe of hip impingement or FAI and see if it sounds like what you are experiencing

I had a similar pain and it was especially painfully when sleeping. Someone suggested Epsom salt baths and within a month it was about 80% better. Worth a try

Are you female? If so and you still have your uterus, it could be adenomyosis. It's like endometriosis but confined to the internal muscle layer of the uterus. I had it had a hysterectomy ad the hip pain just like you describe has gone it had caused my womb yo enlarge and press on my bladder which was irritating s major nerve bundle on the leg and hip area

Like you I had all the tests, MRI etc saw a hip specialist surgeon and aside from a slight case of bursitis, that they were looking g to find because if such strong symptoms.. might be worth looking into

I had a sore right hip and GP did a blood test and my Vit D was super low which can cause joint pain. So may be something like that?

MaureenMLove · 14/09/2017 22:22

I have exactly the same! I had it for a good few years and just ignored it really. It was worse in the evenings, so I just figured it was me getting old! I'm 49. It completely went, when I started doing some cross country walking, lots of hills, so it wasn't gentle walking.

Then a couple of months ago I started running, ran a 6k two weeks ago and it's back with a vengeance.

I have a GP appointment tomorrow, so I'll report back!

How did you get on MaureenMLove?

I have this! I'm 36 and have had two kids in six years. I have a dull ache in my hips whilst lying in bed, which is worse on my left side (I think because that's the side I tend to sleep on?). Had it for a few months now so finally visited GP last week who sent me for an x-ray.

I've got to ring surgery on Monday to see if the results are in, and will report back.

He suspects bursitis. Probably made worse, by doing too much, too soon on the running front. (I feel like Forest Gump at the moment, I just wanna run!).

So extra strength ibuprofen and ice it every 4 hours or so. That was Friday and I believe it's feeling better already. Although I haven't been on my feet at work all day yet and no massive amount of walking. He said that obviously it can take a long time to heel, because unless you're on complete bed rest, you can't rest your hip.

He did say, if it wasn't any better by the middle of October, to call him and he'll arrange a scan. It's that or cortisone injections. Don't fancy that.

Pud2 · 17/09/2017 13:31

Interesting. Bursitis seems to be the initial diagnosis but my scan showed no inflammation of the bursa. Painkillers definitely help but I don't really want to take those long term. Keep us posted MaureeMLove and GoingRouge!
