Hiatus hernia attack

Was diagnosed with HA about 8 months ago and have had a few attacks in that time. Usually lasts about ten minutes very painful and a bit scary but usually sorts itself out and feel ok after. Usually happens when I start to eat bread or stodgy food too quick.
Last night I had an awful episode at a friends house right at the beginning of a meal - I'd only eaten a few mouthfuls. I felt like my chest was going to actually explode. I could not swallow for about 40 minutes and had a constant need to burp which I couldnt really do because I couldnt swallow - not even saliva which was building up very quickly. The attack did pass after about an hour but left me feeling really wretched.
Does anone else suffer? Do you have any advice as to what to do when an attack starts? For me it feels like my eosofagus has 'crashed' and wont work and my chest will pop. I dont know what to do when it happens apart from walk around and try to keep calm and dribble into a sink. Sorry it sounds pathetic. I know the advice about small meals and avoiding certain foods (we were having a takeaway its true and I should rethink my choices but i hadnt actually eaten more than a couple of forksful).
So yeah, any advice about what to do to stop an attack once its started?

please go to the Doctor straightaway. This does not sound like hiatus hernia to me you may need a camera exam.

thanks welshmist I did have a camera exam and that is when the Hiatus Hernia was diagnosed. But i will go back I think.

Did they prescribe any medication?

humblesims · 11/09/2017 13:01

no she said to take gaviscon for indegestion etc. Its not usually as bad as this usually. I'll go back if it recurs that bad.

Mother of God you should be on omeprazole as well as gaviscon, go back now!!

welshmist · 11/09/2017 13:41

to be honest your episodes sound more like GERD or GORD so this really needs to be looked at.

I had a gastroscopy for symptoms of difficulty swallowing and they found a hernia. I was prescribed omeprazole and my symptoms sound loads milder than yours, so I would definitely speak to your gp again.

OK Will go back to GP. dont fancy another gastroscopy though tbh.
