Blood in poo! relax or panic?

Last week the whole family went down with an pretty vicious sickness bug. Kids just had vomiting but me and dh had one really bad bout of diahorea at the height of the sickness.

Dh said to me yesterday that he had blood in his stools. I fobed him off because he's had piles in the past and likes to inform me of this. However today my poo was completely coated in sticky dark blood Asked dh an he said thats how his was.

Do you think this is sickness bug related and do you think we need to see a dr at all? Has anyone else experienced similar?

Sorry if your squimish

I would suggest getting it checked out with GP just for sure. Could be down to haemorrhoids but you never know. Better safe than sorry.

Odd that you have both had it though. Have you both eaten something with food colouring in?

hairymclary · 03/04/2007 21:35

yes, see a doctor. dark blood is worse than bright red blood I think, so worth getting it checked out.
or ring NHS direct

No food colouring eaten.

Haemorrhoids are a possibility but I've never had them before and I would have thought it would just be on one side IYKWIM

When I had the vomiting I saw blood in that but I've been taking strong pain killers for a acute back problem so assumed that my stomach was just irratated by them.

I agree It's very wierd for us both to have the same symptom.

I am not a doctor but my understanding is that blood IN the stools is something to be worried about. whereas sounds like we are just talking about blood around the stools here. Anyway prob a good idea to run it by your GP?

It could just be (and im not a doctor either) that your intestine/colon has become inflammed and there has been some loss of blood due to the sickness bug. I used to be a vet nurse and would see this a lot in dogs, a bit different i know but thats what the vet used to diagnose. I would be stunned if it were anything more sinister than your nasty sickness bug on account of both you and hubby having it. Blood from the stomach tends to show up as black stools (occult blood) and that could be more serious (ulcer) but this sounds like a colitis, see how it goes, if it recurs get it checked out, stool sample to the doc, lovely.

I think if we're ok tommorow I'll just put it down to the stomach bug otherwise we better get checked out.

Thanks girls! (ps should I have changed my name for this subject or will it come back to haunt me in future threads?
