I am otherwise healthy & young (23).

I had an abortion 18 months ago, since then things have not really stabilised (from what I remember they were fairly regular before that but they've never been like clockwork) and I'm wondering if this could be why, which worries me? I had the contraceptive injection afterwards but bled constantly for the 12 weeks so didn't carry on with it. I stopped using hormonal contraception after that and just used condoms.

I can't remember when exactly the massive gaps started, sometimes it'd be 4 weeks between them like normal then other times 6/7 weeks, but for the last 3 periods at least there's been 7-8 week gaps. I have had a lot of stress recently to be fair which could be a factor but it's been going on so long with the lateness that I'm getting concerned.

I am going to go to the GP, but I just wondered what could be going on, if it's likely to be due to the abortion. I'm also really worried about it in terms of fertility.

Irregular periods are commonly caused by hormonal imbalances; in this respect a condition called polycystic ovaries can be to blame. Another possible cause is problems with the thyroid gland. Both of these can be looked for via blood tests.

A "normal" cycle is a cycle length of between 21 and 35 days or with less than 4 days of variation from month to month. I would not think it has anything to do with the abortion at all.
