Ear wax and pain

Is it normal to have a lot of pain with a build up of ear wax?

No. Discomfort from the blockage maybe, but not pain.

Yes, it is. I went to the doc a few months ago because I had earache which was keeping me awake at night. I was sure I had an ear infection but the doc said my ear was full of wax. I had to put in warm olive oil for a week and then get it syringed. I thought the oil would make the pain worse but it didn't.
