White lumpy rash on the edges of the ears - does this sound like an allergy to you?

Ds2 (2.11) has woken up from his nap and I noticed his ears looked a bit red and what only can be described as uneven and lumpy. On close inspection it looks like little white lumps surrounded by very red and irritated skin - if I didn't know better I'd swear he'd rubbed his ears into a big nettle patch!

No idea what's caused this or what it is - no sign of any kind of rash anywhere else on his body. I've given him a small dose of piriton in case it's itchy.

Does it sound allergy related? Or something more sinister? Can't seem to find anything online - hives, etc all seem to be red rashes apparently, and the only ear rash I've found is measles and that starts BEHIND the ears not on the rims of his ears - he's had his MMR and it doesn't look even remotely measlesy.

Seems otherwise well in himself so don't know whether to bother a doctor this late in the day or not...
