Recurrent thrush or worse?!

Basically, I think I have recurrent thrush. Always been pretty prone since starting to take the pill late teens but last year or so has been very frequent. The symptoms are mild at first and I usually try to ignore them and see if they will settle themselves - after being intermittent for a bit, they get worse and then I take fluconazole. Generally find this effective and within a week my symptoms are gone. Then anywhere from a few weeks to a few months it reappears! I feel that maybe treating it isn't getting rid of it fully and it is then developing to a point where I have symptoms.

Been to GP and described symptoms and he said it sounded like thrush and prescribed a longer course of fluconazole although no active symptoms at time and so gave me a self-swab to do. Now waiting for results. I suffer from health anxiety quite badly and I am really worried what if the swab doesn't show thrush? Not sure what else it could be? Have scared myself reading about lichen sclerosus on the internet which has similar symptoms but sounds horrible. I don't think it can be that as I have a creamy white discharge indicative of thrush and no sign of obvious skin discolouration or other changes down there as far as I can tell. I have noticed I sometimes get a tiny split at the bottom of my vagina opening when having sex (apologies to be so personal) but it doesn't happen all the time and I think this could be due to the skin being fragile due to thrush and also being very tense about sex being uncomfortable/causing a further bout of thrush.

If anyone has any similar experiences or any advice, I would be very grateful! Smile

I used to get recurring thrush when I was with DH, it disappeared for two years when single and recently when active again came back. Usually before a period as well so I think it could be hormonal and my "balance" is sensitive down there.

One Dr suggested it could be more akin to ecsma (sp) and canesten made it so much worse, I have sensitive skin anyway so gave me trimovate cream which clearance it up ever time.

It's unlikely to be anything more serious for you so step away from Dr a google. And consider sensitive skin and anything else it could be linked to such as hormones and contact.

Have you been tested for other infections or had a recent STI test at your GUM clinic? There's lots of infections it could be, bacterial vaginosis being one of them. Some people do find it hard to get rid of thrush though, I seem to get it quite a lot in pregnancy and it never really clears up fully with antibiotics.
