Asbestos panic - reassurance needed!

Had ceilings tested - artex contained Chrysotile asbestos. Having bathroom done and all ceilings skimmed to seal it in. The bathroom plumber knows and we discussed masks and damping diwn etc. Anyway he plastered over ceiling. Then today when I was upstairs with dd there was loads of dust and her has drilled through the plaster and into the artex to put in down lights and extractor fan. We were all coughing but I didn't realise that's what he was doing until tonight as I wasn't in the room with him. Freaked out that we have breathed in asbestos. Any advice out there?

Bump have the same problem

It's fine, asbestos poisioning isn't about a one off incident like you're describing

MrsCornish · 12/08/2017 00:33

My understanding is that you would only be at risk if you were exposed to the dust regularly eg as part of your work. But a one off encounter would not be anything to worry about.

I had a similar worry after bathroom ceiling was damaged, the percentage of asbestos in artex is between 3-5% if I remember correctly and is no longer classified as high risk when removing.
I would damp dust and if you have you have vacuumed be careful when you empty it.
I would imagine loads of people have been exposed putting in spotlights/ light fittings over the years.

Thank you all so much dd 3 up with tummy ache now so I've got something else to
Worry about! haha -I really appreciate your quick replies. Feel much better. Just panic, that after having bothered to get it tested -precautions were thrown to the wind - was having images of all the horror stories online. It was so dusty and we were all coughing. I'm sure I remember those corrugated grey panels of the stuff at school. It's just more stressful when you have a little one to worry about. Thanks again X

I was in anxiety overload as my teenage son is having tests/treatment for lung issues/aspergillus allergy/suspicion of CF and I was imagining all the asbestos particles embedding in his irritated lungs...stress of it all made me overthinkConfused

NK... that sounds terrifying! I hope he is coping ok. That must be awful. Yes worried about daughter who just 3 - breathing it all in. I dont' trust gov regulations at all, they used to advise smoking for coughs! I was told by the asbestos guy that they can X-ray to see if it's there. Just hope we didn't get a dose I guess. Good luck to you both. I hope he (and you) get some relief soon. X
