Abnormal smear results...

Just after a bit of a handhold/reassurance please...

Had a smear test done about 8 weeks ago and didn't hear anything so assumed all was normal but have today received a letter saying that my cells have shown high grade (severe) dyskaryosis (?!) and that I have been referred to the hospital for a colposcopy.

I've googled and from what I can tell it sounds like I have HPV.

Anyone had the same results and want to tell me that everything was absolutely fine please?

Hi I haven't personally been through this. But I know multiple people who have, in every case was fine in the end. Abnormal cells were removed then check up six months later.

Good luck Flowers

Hello - I have had high grade (severe) dyskaryosis.
I was also told I had HPV. You don't have to have HPV to have high grade wotsit! (although I did) - I don't have HPV now (had a recent smear) it can come & go.

Right - I was referred for a colposcopy - liquid is put onto your cervix and they then shine a light onto it and can see affected cells. I had quite a few.

I was then referred for a (Lletz) they run a loop with an electrical current over the cervix and it destroys and seals the cells. The most unpleasant part was a burning smell.

I had local anaesthetic for both - and they were fine. The Consultant and nurse were very reassuring!

I had to go back 6 months later for a smear which was normal and I now go back every 18 months - I've had clear results since and my colposcopy was about 5 years ago..can't honestly remember.

Thanks both!!

The sensible side of me knows it'll be absolutely fine but there's just that fear of the unknown!

Glad to hear everything worked out fine for you Northumberland!

Smile Thanks

I think you naturally worry, but it was fine for me!

I had similar - can remember the exact wording it was almost 20 yrs ago.
I had the abnormal cells removed and a biopsy (and they were doing the research then about a link between HPV and cervical cancer - I agreed to participate but never heard anything else). It was fine.
Worse part of the procedure was they had a screen to see what they were doing and because I was studying biochemistry thought I would be interested in watching (you don't have to) and I was until the biopsy when I kept my eyes closed... can't remember if I had an anaesthetic - guess I must have - there was no pain anyway.

No sex for x amount of weeks after (think 6). Had to have more frequent smears - yearly, then 3 yearly for a few years then back to normal 5 yr ones. Never had a problem since, no abnormal scans. And have had two DC since - first one must have been about 3 yrs after....normal births etc.
I think the thing to remember is the point of screening scans is to pick up potential problems as early as possible - and if they do they can treat asap which is much more likely to have a successful outcome.
(Not exactly the same but DF has bladder cancer - picked up because of blood in his urine in a routine health check up - the blood wasn't visible to the eye. He is still under going treatment, not cured. But he is 'lucky' it was caught before it had gone into the muscle or spread anywhere else. His prognosis is relatively good. (He was also lucky that scans to see if it had spread anywhere picked up two aneurysms and also that he had early prostrate cancer -both of which have been treated. In the case of the aneurysms his bladder cancer has saved his life ...)
