Small lump behind dd's nipple (she's 11) - is this normal in puberty?

Just seeking reassurance and advice really. DD told me (tearfully) last night that she has a lump behind one of her nipples that's a bit painful. It feels like a pea.
She's still completely flat-chested so I'm pretty sure that this is the first sign of developing breasts and told her this and not to worry BUT she was still rather tearful about it this morning and then said "what if it's breast cancer" which I assured her of course it wasn't - so she's obviously worrying overly. Just wondered if any other mums have gone through this so I can be more reassured that this is normal. My common sense tells me that of course it is, but there's still a worry niggling away....
I'll probably make a doctor's appointment so that (hopefully) dd will be reassured that this is all OK (just don't want to waste a dcotor's time if it's nothing to worry about).

Don't think you'd be wasting the dr's time. I'd get it checked out for both your peace of mind.

I don't know the answer redpanda - it sounds plausible that it could be normal during puberty. But I would take her to the doctors, see a female doctor, get her checked out, and the doctor could at the same time talk through the issues of puberty. Hope she's ok.

PS - we took ds1 to the doctor when he was 2, as he had a 'pea' lump at the bottom of his neck, just under his collar bone. The doctor said it was a 'good call' and checked for suspicious signs, couldn't find any, and said it could be scar tissue(?), and that it should go as he grew - i.e. become less prominent, and it's totally gone now. But she did say we were right to go in.

If it's painful, that's a good sign I think!

its called budding , I was told by my doctor the it is very common in boys and girls in early puberty.
My son had it and it was quite worrying at the time.

probably breast buds v painful i seem to remember.

Good idea to take her though to put her mind at rest though, will also get her used to the idea of a breast exam being normal.

It is most likely a breast bud. When this happened to my DD I took her to see a female doctor who was absolutely lovely with her ( I just wasn't sure as it felt so much like alump and it was to the side of her nipple, not directly underneath). Anyway, doctor reassured her and said to come back in a month just to make sure. Next month she had one on the other side!

Thanks all - that's what I really needed to hear!
I will make a doctors appointment for our peace of mind but also as you say it will get her used to the idea of being examined and talking about these sort of things.

It's weird being in a situation whereby dd doesn't 100% accept my reassurance that everything is OK. Long gone are the trusting toddler days!

My 9 year old daughter has the same thing. It started about 6 weeks ago, but is less sore now. Everything I read it seems to be part of normal development.

we had exactly the same situation last year when dd2 was 10. She had a lump and we took her to the gp as my older dd hadn't had this when she started to develop. First GP was unsure and said to bring her back to our own lady gp, which was a little bit unsettling. When we saw her, however, she immediately felt it and said "breast bud, perfectly normal". So that was ok. Take her along to put your mind at rest and dd's of course. Good luck.

This happened to my dd 7 a couple of weeks ago, i panicked took her to the doc's... it was breast bud i was shocked as she's only 7. Let us know.

Oh my God are you my mum?

I had these when I was 9. I got a (what I know now was a) breastbud, and sobbed to my mum after weeks of angsting about whether it would be better not to tell her.

She had to take me to the doctor to have me told what it was - I didn't believe a word she said.

But then, one of my friends at school had cancer at the time, so not surprising for me to be scared.

It is the first sign of breast development. If she doesn't where a crop top or suppotive cami, now may be a good time to start, to protect her nipple from chafing.
