Driving home on Sunday, dd complained about feeling sick (doesn't normally get car sick) and having a headache.

Took her home and gave her an early night. She came home from school on Monday crying, saying she had a headache, felt hot, then felt cold (her words, not me feeling her).

Has gone on like this all week. Last night she looked really pale, gave her more Calpol, took her to bed. Complained of sweating buckets in the night Wednesday night.

She's eating virtually nothing - even her favourite Tiramisu gets the thumbs down, though she did manage a couple of pancakes last night. Other than that, no other syptoms. Tried to take her temperature last night and she objected so ended up measuring it under her arm and it read 34.something, so obviously not a very accurate reading. She holds her head when she coughs (a leftover from a cold a couple of weeks back) because that makes her head ache more.

Am at a loss. There's no tangible obvious signs of anything, but clearly this has gone on longer than it should. To confuse things ever more H purported yesterday to have caught the same thing as dd, and spent the day in bed. He woke up fine and eating, though.

Any thoughts? TIA

PS she has insisted on going to school, but both my dds have a problem with asking their teacher to phone home so they can go home, IYSWIM. Saw her Monday lunchtime at school and asked her how she was feeling, and I just got waved off.

Sorry for the ramble.

straight to GP
feeling sick and headache should always be checked out

whoopsfallenoveragain · 29/03/2007 07:02

I think it is one of the bigs going around as dd was ill at the weekend before last threw up and complained of sore neck but wonder if she meant head.
ds on Thursday complained of a headache and was off for the day but has had temperature going up and down for a few days. I called the docs about the headache and they said to call back if he still had it a week later but to just keep giving him ibruprofen & Calpol.

bugs even

earlgrey · 29/03/2007 07:12

Sorry SW forgot to add that she hasn't complained of feeing sick since Monday, but I wonder if that's because of why she's not eating anything. She has a huge fear of GPs, and I wonder if she's shrugging it off as she knows I'll take her if she admits to it.

My 2 younger DDs had a very similar thing a few weeks ago. My youngest lost a lot of weight over a 10 day or so period. She has fluey simptoms and aches too.
dd1(12) had symptoms for 24 hours.

Get her checked out to give you peace of mind but it sounds very much like a virus.

TrilbyOFerrall · 29/03/2007 07:16

You say she's not eating much, but is she drinking? The headache could be dehydration.

My dd(6) had a cold/bad cough a couple of weeks ago and has been back at school since. Yesterday she complained of headache and feeling sick in the car on the way home. Her cough has still not cleared and she was very weepy last night. Dh and I are of the mind to keep her off school today, but I'll see when she gets up.

It could be that you're DD hasn't quite shaken off the bug she had, or that she's got another one while her defenses are down.

Would it be worth mentioning to the school that she's not been feeling too well, and ask that they keep any eye on her?

On another note Chicken Pox is going round our area. Could she be coming down with something like that?

Hope she feels better today.

Thanks everyone. Strangely, for someone who doesn't drink much, she's drinking LOADS. Also just ripped off her school sweatshirt because she was complaining of feeling hot, and now says her throat hurts.

Am I right in thinking if you have a really bad high temperature it actually makes you feel cold and start shivering?

Sorry TOF forgot to say she's already had CP.

Yes - if you have a high temp you do feel headachy and shivery. TBH if mine were like this, they put to bed and given hot drinks and calpol for at least 24 hours to allow their body to rest and fight off whatever the illness was. I know it is difficult if they want to go to school, but sadly we live in a culture that expects everyone to struggle on, even when ill, and I am sure that is why viruses etc drag on and get worse.

It sounds like a virus - maybe a good rest and TLC is the answer?

Hope she feels better soon.

earlgrey · 29/03/2007 08:15

3lf, it was her insisting she goes in, and me not wanting to exacerbate her anguish that made me let her go. I wholeheartedly agree with you. But given she didn't have that 24hr bed rest, do you think it's gone on long enough anyway. And can they do anything if it's a virus, anyway?

I do understand - I wasn't trying to make you feel bad - just offering a suggestion as to why these things can drag on. Maybe now is the time to see the GP just to make sure she hasn't developed a bacterial tonsillitis as a result of being run down? There is a lot of it about recently. I know 4 people in my immediate circle of friends who have had penicillin for nasty tonsillitis in the last couple of weeks.

3littlefrogs · 29/03/2007 08:25

I am off to school and work now - I hope she feels better soon.

chloesmumtoo · 29/03/2007 09:37

Yeah, I was gonna say could be a throat infection? With infections I always get very hot/shivery ect. May pay to get her throat looked at.

earlgrey · 29/03/2007 10:18

Thanks everyone. Am at school this lunchtime, will try and see what's she's like then and book appt if she still seems to be suffering.
