Hello, I am wondering if anyone has had experience of an ovarian cyst. Mines is 4cm and i was in hospital last week with severe pain where they discovered it. They said as it was 4cm they would just follow up in 3 months. The pain now comes and goes but the bloating is awful i look 5 months pregnant and i hate the thought of this being inside me. Would the gp refer me to gyne quicker if i went back and complained about my symptoms. Thanks

Not in my experience! You have my utmost sympathy as the pain was awful, I found that tramadol was the painkiller that actually worked.

But it did self resolve, took about two weeks, but its something that usually self resolves unless its a dermoid cyst (thats checked in the scan).

The bloating also goes down too, now get the occassional twinge still, but as the only treatment option seems to be removing the ovary - it seems a bit too drastic compared with the level of symptoms.

You might want to double check hormone contraception, some prevent egg release which would stop a follicle forming in the first place if your prone to repeat attacks.

I had one that was 3.5-4cms across. I couldn't feel a thing; it was found for an ultrasound.

I'm surprised you think one that size is causing you to look bloated- it's just over an inch across and deep in your pelvis. If you are looking 5 months gone, it's not the cyst.

Follow up is normal- mine was there for 2 years- but if it gets worse see your GP again.

Thank you both for your replies. They only said it was a benign cyst not sure if its a dermoid. I read online they can just remove the cyst but sometimes the ovary too. I want another child so dont really want this but not liking the symptoms! Pollyperky apparantly its the hormones that cause bloating.

I don't know what you mean. The cyst if benign doesn't produce hormones it's a fluid filled sac left over from ovulation (I think).

There are many different types of ovarian cysts. Some that will shrink on their own, some rupture or twist and others may grow and will then be surgically removed. The NHS monitor cysts under 5cm in the hope that they resolves themselves. I believe cysts over 5cm are often removed.

I had a 10cm endometrioma ovarian cyst removed last month. My ovary was saved and I've been assured its still in working order.

Bloating is common with cysts no matter what the size. Being referred to Gynae based on your symptoms comes down to your GP. I've complained of symptoms for 10 years and got absolutely nowhere with 3 separate GPs. It was only when I had a miscarriage (not related to the cyst) and had an ultrasound that they realised how big it was and finally took me seriously.

It seems strange to me. I wish I had private health care. Been back to gp and she gave me buscopan for the pain as codeine making me very tired. Im concerned i will keep missing time off work. Had to come home other night and I work for a comoany with a harsh absence policy. Waiting on gyne referral. Sigh.
