Smear test, hpv, lletz procedure

I a smear 7 weeks ago then had to have a lletz procedure. Got a letter today saying I have to go back for another smear in 6 months, but i am cancer free, and have hpv test. Now I have zero knowledge of the hpv virus. Is it an std? Does your smear test for that? Last smear I had was 3 years ago, if I get hpv positive result does that mean that I've gone from hpv negative to hpv positive?

You didn't have cancer, you had (I'm guessing) CIN3. This means the cells had changed to such an extent that you had a possibility of developing cancer at some stage. Hence you had the lletz procedure to remove the affected area.

The 6 month smear is to check you haven't developed any more abnormal cells.

HPV is a very common std - the majority of us will get it at some stage regardless of how many partners we have. Our bodies usually get rid of it without any treatment.

You may have had hpv at your previous smear but they might not have tested for it if you didn't have any cell abnormalities.
