Chest pain

I'm having chest pain. It feels muscular rather than a heart attack Confused as it's been coming and going for the past few days and I've also had excruciating neck/shoulder pain (again, feels muscular) for a few days.

I don't know what's causing it. Friend suggested stress (I've just returned to work after 3 weeks off sick with stress, although I don't feel too bad about it).

What can I do about muscular upper body pain? I wondered if taking a bath would help - any thoughts?

whereabouts in your chest is the pain? Middle, side, upper, lower?
what kind of pain? Ache, pressure, stabbing?

How old are you?

Any chest pain ought to be checked by your GP. Make an appt.

Neverknowing · 14/07/2017 13:19

My DP had this, they checked him for hepatitis and something else but it ended up being a chest condition where the muscles are inflamed (especially when stressed).
I also had this and it ended up being angina and a fairly serious heart condition. Call 111 and ask them as they may want to see you straight away ! Im sure its nothing but better safe right?!

Itscurtainsforyou · 14/07/2017 13:19

It's upper chest, mainly on the left, resonating around my back and shoulder blades. It's like a strong ache that comes and goes.

I'm 42.

Please go to A&E or your GP today. It sounds like heart pain but of course may not be at all but needs checking out.

Itscurtainsforyou · 14/07/2017 14:10

Thanks all. I've phoned 111 who are going to get someone to call me back.

111 is not staffed by drs or even nurses.. The people who man it work from a script and a computer. You really ought to see your GP or go to A&E.
Your GP ought to see you as an emergency today.
I had chest pain, mine did, and did an ECG on the spot.

Itscurtainsforyou · 14/07/2017 15:32

A dr phoned me back and has told me to go to the walk in centre, so I'm on my way now.

The NHS is amazing.

I was sent straight through to the urgent care centre, ecg and bloods done, now being sent for a chest X-ray.

Thanks all

Heck yes. Sorry to add to this completed thread. I had really bad chest pain on Wednesday night, been getting it for a few months now. Went on MN (as you do) to lurk for advice, and read so many comments to other posters from health professionals about 'Go to the hospital now!' 'Seek medical advice!'. I did and they were wonderful, fast tracking me for ecg and bloods, nothing found, but I have a referral to chest pain clinic, and a spray to use if I feel pain.
So, if you are lurking, like I was. Seek medical advice.
If you go to A&E they will prioritise you and rule out anything it could be. It is worth doing.
Thank you NHS Flowers

You ok OP? Any news?

Itscurtainsforyou · 15/07/2017 14:45

Hi there - thanks for all your messages.

I was really looked after. At booking in I was given a card that said "immediate ECG please" and taken straight in. They did that, took bloods and did a chest X-ray. All was clear except slightly raised infection markers so they said I probably had a virus, but to go back if I had more/different chest pain.

I bloody love the NHS Smile

Pleased all ok!

WannaBe · 15/07/2017 15:17

Glad all ok. Just as an aside, I have cardiomyopathy which is a condition which affects the heart muscle, so even what you feel could be muscular pain could still be a heart condition. One in 500 people have the condition and don't realise it so never rule out chest pain as that it could be alright.

I too love the NHS but I have some fairly serious heart related issues and am always seen as a matter of priority.

trinity0097 · 15/07/2017 15:56

Could it be gallstone related?

My gallstone attacks felt like I was having a heart attack (but I can't compare) and awful shoulder/upper back pain. The first time I had them I was blue lighted to A&E from work as they thought I was having a heart attack.

Aquamarine1029 · 16/07/2017 17:37

I second having your gallbladder checked if this continues. The pain you have is exactly what I had and months later it was discovered that my gallbladder had essentially stopped working. No stones, but I was miserable. Had it out and now totally back to normal.

PollyPerky · 16/07/2017 19:06

Maybe wrong here but the OP said the pain was centre and left side. Gall bladder is on your right side nr your liver.

Aquamarine1029 · 16/07/2017 19:23

Polly, gallbladder pain is often in unusual places, which is why so many suffer for so long because they don't associate it to their gallbladder.

trinity0097 · 17/07/2017 03:56

My gallbladder pain was dead centre and through my boobs, not to one side or the other.

Shosha1 · 17/07/2017 05:22

Costochonderitis ? I have had it for two years now. Sounds very like it.

I had all the heart tests, more than once. It then turned out to be this.
