Gout?

Yesterday morning, I was woken up by the throbbing pain in my big toe. I thought to myself wtf? I haven't knocked it, stumped it or dropped anything on it. It looked ok, I could walk on it, it just really hurt. Anyway I got through the day.

This morning, I cried with the pain, couldn't sleep with the pain, I can't bend it & I can't walk. It looks slightly swollen & a little bit red. The pain is indescribable. I briefly spoke on the phone with my GP (as I can't walk to the drs I have to wait until OH gets in from work to take me) she said it sounds like gout but needs to have a look. As far as I know, no-one in the family has had gout.

Does gout come on so sudden like this? Has anyone had this before, if so how long does it last for? I have a driving test next week 😫 I need to be ok for that!!!

Poor you. If you haven't already done so, look online to get a list of food to avoid.

It can come on quickly and it is agonising (DH suffers). The bout lasts a few days to a week, depending on severity. It's not necessarily hereditary either. As Molly says, certain foods can bring it on. Best to see your GP.

Good luck with the driving test!

Thanks for the replies.

I've see one of the GP's at my doctors surgery & he was unsure whether it was gout or a bone joint infection - he'd of like me to get some bloods done but it was too late in the day & I had no way of going up to the hospital, so he rang through to the orthopaedics there & they suggested treating it as gout.

I've also acquired a water infection during the course of the day - so I'm on antibiotics for that - but apart from that I'm ok!

I've had to change the date of my driving test - I only had up until tomorrow then change it or I'd lose my fee - imagine my driving instructor's face when he's read my text - 'I've got gout, I've had to postbone my test next week....' yeah, right! I'm gutted though, I wanted to get it over & done with before the school holidays. But I don't know how long I will be 'off my feet' for, I could get worse before I get better.

It seems gout was prone to the rich in years past - well all I can say is it's extremely unfair that I've got it - I don't drink nearly enough, I missed all the fun in that & ended up with it! Terrible injustice!
