This is a bit of a long shot seeing as dentist, pharmacist, GP and rheumatology nurse don't know what has caused it. Dd 24 has Ankylosing Spondylitis and last week began immunosuppressant treatment. Besides this and for the last six months she has been taking a cocktail of pain medication morphine, ora morph, diclofenac, tramadol, paracetamol and amitryptylene.
Earlier in the week dd started having toothache but it wasn't in a particular tooth in so far as she couldn't determine which tooth hurt or even whether it was top or bottom and one side of he face began to swell fromher temple to her lower jaw
Bearing in mind she is taking a cocktail of drugs the pain was really severe and only ora morph taken regularly took the edge off.
Because of the immunosuppressants she got an urgent appointment with the dentist as any infection needs to be treated. He took xrays and checked her teeth and gums but there was no reason for pain and no infection and he didn't think the swelling was because of her teeth.
She saw the GP today who again didn't think the swelling was down to her teeth but didn't know why she was in pain and swollen but prescribed antihistamines in case it was an allergic reaction and advised that she phoned rheumatology.
She phoned rheumatology dept. who have essentially agreed with GP that it sounds like an allergy and so immunosuppressant treatment has been stopped and the nurse will discuss with consultant.
Dd is really distressed and in pain both from her teeth and the pain from the AS. Is it likely that an allergy would cause severe pain and swelling only on one side? Would dd have an allergic reaction more than a week after the injection? What could it be if it isn't toothache or allergy?
