Hiccups won't stop

Oh Mumsnet, you are wise, please help, especially medical people. My dad, 79, had MRI scan on bowel midday yesterday. He had to drink 2 litres of something called Mannitol first to help with images. Ever since he's had intermittent hiccups. Tried NHS Direct who said contact GP. Tried duty GP on phone who prescribed an anti sickness pill to settle and relax stomach. Tried, as mentioned on NHS website, sipping cold water, holding breath, breathing into paper bag. No luck. Any ideas or explanations?
