Vaginal Septum

Hi everyone,
DD2 she has finally found out why she's had so many problems regarding tampons, she has a vaginal septum. Yes, shes googled it and is a very worried now as well as relieved. She initially decided she wasn't going to bother going to her GP - she was on a UNI field trip, her tampon wouldn't come out, so she had to go to the ER they eventually got her to see an OBGYN who removed the tampon, told her what the problem was to go see her GP for a referral - but the possibility of never having sex and living a sex free life didn't quite appeal. Her thoughts were it hurt so much just with tampons whats a penis going to be like??
I know a few MNetters have had a vaginal septum too, but it has been years ago since their posts and any up to date information would be wonderful!
Her GP has seen her today, she told DD2 it may be Christmas before she sees the OBGYN and to avoid tampons til its sorted. For her that feels a lifetime - shes 19.
Now, what will happen at the consultation? Will it take months to have the surgery? What will the surgery consist of? Local or general anesthetic? Would it be quicker if we bit the bullet and went private?

Thanks in Advance
