Advice needed- dd "bits" smell

I am very embarrassed about this, but here goes.
DD is 14months old, and sometimes her bits smell when I remove her nappy. She has a bath everynight, and is washed down there on a morning. But there is still a smell, not hugely unpleasent but not nice either

Do you think I should be doing anything else to clean her? Should I be getting into all her nooks and crannies?
She does object when I try to clean her labia.

I am wary of using harsh soaps, as I know they can unbalance her natural bacteria down there, which may lead to her getting infections.

Please give me some advice.

That reminds me of my labour....ugh...had to keep showing my pad to the midwife to make sure there was no blood in the stuff I was passing out....was so embarassing, waddling to the loo and showing it to her in manner of me being a teenager again and going maaaaaa, I've got my period......is there no dignity in being a woman????

robbosmum · 19/03/2007 20:20

have u tried leaving her nappy off ofr a bit everyday to "air" her?

DD (nearly 4) has had this on and off and used to get it when she was in nappies, and I always put it down to the fact that she has always been really bad at drinking enough, and her wee getting concentrated. She sometimes gets sore there too, but the smell and soreness only ever lasts a day or two.

I've just taken her to the doctors as she had a couple of accidents and I wondered if she had a urine infection. She wasn't in any pain or seemed ill, but I just wanted her checked out.

The doc is checking a urine sample, but said that sometimes girls will dribble a little bit of wee and their knickers get damp, which is what causes the smell/redness and said it was nothing to worry about, to carry on putting sudocreme on and washing her in just water.

Seriously, back to the original question......... yes I give her naked time for an hour every night after tea, so she can run around and be liberated.......just like her mama.......

I sniffed my knickers too when I thought I'd had a show. The midwife had told us that we would be able to tell as they wouldn't smell of wee.

I couldn't smell wee but just to be on the safe side I stuck them on the radiator, figuring that the heat would make them really smell so I could be certain.

I now have visions of mnetters everywhere bending over and sniffing their fanjos!!

pmsl at thought of knickers with a show drying on a radiator!!!

Talking of knickers reminds me of my mums best mate...she was a bit of a wild girl in her day and used to tell me when I started going out with blokes that if, the next morning, I could throw my kecks up on the ceiling and they stuck, I've had a good night......lol!!

I have this with my DD1-now 3 yrs and 8 months. Only noticed it a few months back but it is horrid even though she has baths and I use a baby wipe in the morning. When I went round to my friend's house one day her DD1 was poorly hence had been laid on the settee asleep with a pull up on. My friend was washing her bits and turns out her DD1 has the same smell. She said it is caused by wearing nappies at night. Can't wait for her to be nappy free-even DD1 walks round saying her bits smell.

BibiThree · 19/03/2007 20:37

I've noticed this with dd now she's in knickers. We put it down to her not wiping herself properly after using the toilet/potty. We bath her every night before bed and have checked for signs of infection, but I think it could be the combination of her leaking a bit of wee before she gets to the toilet and not wiping properly.

Spidermama · 19/03/2007 20:49

Maybe over bathing and over washing is forcing there fadges to over produce to counteract the stripping away of natural moistness. Does that make sense or am I on a gross-fest of my own now?

snowing · 19/03/2007 21:41

a little gross, but know what you mean, you have to be careful not to upset the natural balance of your fanjos natural bacterial flora

I agree...I can't use any highly perfumed soaps or I end up with a scratchy minge....my mate can't even use coloured loo roll as it upsets her fanjo!

Interesting topic this over washing.. I'm muslim and we are required to wash with water after weeing or other more ahem...major things, but when I did the washing with water after wees...I ended up with thrush and a v dry fanjo......wonder if other muslim women get that?

Spidermama · 19/03/2007 22:10

Interesting Nikki. I certainly used to get thrush after washing with soap, so I stopped. But water doesn't seem to bring it on. Mind you maybe if I did wash with water after every wee it would be different. I guess I'd worry about stripping away the natural ... erm ... coating stuff.
