Heavy bleeding

In my 40s and I have a very heavy period which I have not had before. Period started at day 18 of cycle and am on day 7 of heavy bleeding.. I am quite worried as it's not something I have experienced before and the bleeding isn't starting to become less after 7 days. Has anyone else had this? I even bled through my clothes few days ago 2 hours after changing tampon.

I had this after starting periods again with my second child. I went to a&e after phoning non-emergency line, was given tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding and then had s mirena coil fitted - if it's getting worse call non emergency line for advice or your GP first thing tomorrow

Had a coil fitted mid cycle by the way not in a&e
These are if course different circumstances but you may need investigations as to why the heavy bleeding mid cycle

Could be to do with peri menopause I'm afraid :-( periods go bloody haywire rather than stop dead. It can start in 40s, mine did at 41. Good luck

As Bunnyfuller says, this can happen with perimenopause. My periods were lightish (three days in total, only one of heavy bleeding) and predictable for years and suddenly went bonkers.
Now (I'm 49) they often come early and I may have three days of heavy bleeding and seven days in total. I get cramps now too, and the bleeding is off the charts. Sometimes I put in a tampon and get washed and dressed and when I've finished dressing it's time to change the tampon.
I really struggled to get a smear appointment as I always seemed to be bleeding heavily on the day.
It's like being a teenager again but not in a good way.

You need to be checked by a doctor but if there are no other unusual symptoms then it's probably the peri menopause, I'm 44 and over the last few years I have had some irregular cycle lengths and some periods where a super plus tampon has lasted barely an hour. I have found that if I take a Menopace supplement daily then my periods usually arrive more or less when they should. Also as soon as your period starts take 2 ibuprofen 4 times a day that can help make them lighter. Works for me anyway.

Thanks so much it is very reassuring to hear your stories. I took two lots of feminax express yesterday and bleeding has almost stopped so I don't know if it is coincidence... probably the ibuprofen in them.

If you start struggling with fatigue, get your iron levels tested as heavy periods cause iron levels to plummet! I've had this problem for a few years Hmm
