Spreading rash from insect bite

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 02/06/2017 15:50

I got bitten by something in the garden yesterday on the middle of my thigh.

This morning there was a bright red patch around it and it's hot and itchy. The patch has grown from about 4cm across this morning to about 15cm across now. It's still red and hot but the outer ring of the rash is paler and lumpy.

I feel fine in myself so am not sure if I should grin and bear it or head to the walk-in clinic?

Do you normally react to bites?

I do, so wouldn't particularly worry, but if you don't it might be worth having it checked out in case it's infected.
Have you tried antihistamine?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/06/2017 15:58

Can you upload a pic?

cricketbat · 02/06/2017 16:00

Take some antihistamine...piriton or similar

Rayna37 · 02/06/2017 16:18

This is a pretty standard reaction to a bite for me even when I'm taking daily antihistamines for hay fever. Take them if you haven't yet, see if you can get anything topical to go on it, try not to scratch due to risk of infection (scratch around it but avoid the site of the bite) and wait it out, I'm afraid!

is your leg swollen?

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 02/06/2017 16:47

It's only swollen around the rash area, the rest of the leg is fine

I'm holding off on taking piriton until I finish work as it knocks me out

I do tend to react to insect bites but it's usually only a cm or so around the bite, not this far

I'd go to walk-in clinic. Might be infected. Google cellulitis.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 02/06/2017 17:55

You should go to the walk in clinic for them to look at it; it may be infected and cellulitis is a possibility.

Just on the basis that you mention a 'ring' around the rash, check if it matches the 'bullseye' rash of lyme disease (Google it). If it does, take a picture and see a GP as soon as you can because lyme needs antibiotics.

Redness after a bite that spreads that much should be seen by an HCP. It's possible you'll need ABs
