Anyone suggest anything to calm my cough down please?

DS had it on Monday and Tuesday, so of course I've cought it now, and I can't do anything without coughing every 20 - 30 seconds (as dh found when he fancied a 'quick-one' early this morning )

But it's really annoying me now, this constant irritation in my throat and the cough. I take Benalyn at night-time, but that sends me to sleep, find the non-drowsy one doesn't work (and haven't got any in anyway). Any old-wives remedies you can suggest?

Gargling with soluble aspirin or even just hot water can calm down a tickly cough. Vicks on your chest can too.

I wouldn't bother with Benilyn until your cough starts to get very chesty - i have found the best stuff for suppressing a cough is Actifed for dry coughs. It actually reduces the urge to cough.

poor you - hope it feels better soon.

hot water helps me, chuck a bit of lemon and honey in it too. Bar that good old benilyn does the trick in this house.

best thing to get rid of a cough is to do steam inhalation. Granted it's a bit boring but it's a great excuse for sitting with your feet up for 10 mins twice a day listening to the radio.

Honey, lemon and whiskey in warm water. Gargle for as long as you can stand to ,then drink the rest. Guaranteed cure

Here is a recipe for a natural cough mixture from a book written by a nurse. My mum always used this with us, seemed to do the job....chop up some strong onion (nature's anti-biotic) put it in bottom of a jar and cover with honey and leave it overnight or for quite a few hours. All the onion juice goes into the honey and the honey becomes runny, then you take a tablespoon or two of the honey mixture few times a day as if it was cough mixture. And get as much rest as you can!
