I keep smelling toast

Help! For about the last 3-4 weeks I've been low level under the weather. Started with very swollen glands behind one ear (50p size) and extreme associated pain. This then manifested into a light summer cold.

The following week I had when I can only explain as pregnancy tiredness (I'm def not pregnant) every day I would be in bed at 8 sometimes without dinner as I was so exhausted. Falling asleep at my desk etc in work, basically not normal.

The next week (last week) I've been experiencing migraine like headaches every single day, they start around the same time, 4.30 every day bang, a hideous headache starts.

I wake up feeling a bit headachey but once I'm up take a couple of paracetamol generally I'm ok til later in the day.

My last symptom is for the last 4-5 days I am continually smelling burnt toast, doesn't affect my taste but it's just there, all the time and is driving me slightly mad.

Any ideas? Is it all linked to the headaches, will it just go away?

No idea but I'd definitely take an iron pill and call a doctor and ask to be seen straight away

Theworldisfullofidiots · 26/05/2017 06:38

Go and see your GP!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 26/05/2017 06:40

You need to seek medical advice from the GP if you have not already done so. Talk to this person about your symptoms; you have after all felt bad now for the last 3-4 weeks.

Finlaggan · 26/05/2017 06:40

Really? I don't go to the doctor often but just figured this is some kind of viral thing that will run its course??

The toast thing is starting to get to me but feel stupid going to see the doctor because I can smell toast!

The smelling toast could mean you have a sinus infection.

Fliptophead · 26/05/2017 06:50

Actually don't take an iron pill in case they test your iron levels. Just go see a doctor.

Lunaballoon · 26/05/2017 06:55

I would see a doctor. Phantosmia

megletthesecond · 26/05/2017 06:56

I'm sure my colleague mentioned this once. It's something to do with a type of migraine she has, but she doesn't get the splitting headaches. Go and see your doctor.

Finlaggan · 26/05/2017 07:14

Thanks for that, although I wish I hadn't scrolled to the bottom of that NHS page! I'll call the docs this morning.

Smelling odd things can definitely be linked to the migraines, some people get visual aura but some can get smell auras.

You definitely should see a doctors though

Veterinari · 26/05/2017 08:29

The symptoms you describe can be linked to infections and migraines. However (I don't wish to be alarmist) they can also be a sign of a brain tumour or other neurological disorder. You should be properly checked out asap.

hope to reassure you , i have chronic phantosmia and have had all the tests and nothing found.
still see gp to rule things out , (blood pressure being the first test)

Finlaggan · 28/05/2017 23:10

Thank you. I'm not overly worried but it is driving me mad.

Look it probably isn't anything serious but please see your GP ASAP. My friend could smell burnt toast and ended up having seizures and encephalitis. It's really not worth the risk.
