I burned myself on a heat gun about two and a half weeks ago. It's healing, albeit very slowly because I keep catching it on things and scratching it accidentally.
The first time I changed the dressing it had a sweet of smell, a bit like almonds or overripe fruit, the next week it had changed to a smell like blue cheese and this week it was foul, and smelled like ammonia. It was awful.
There wasn't any other sign of infection so I just carried on trying to keep it protected. I would have liked to leave it without a dressing but it kept weeping and the one time I tried to sleep without anything on I rolled over in my sleep and woke up when I felt it rip off the sheet it had stuck to.
I changed the dressing again tonight and hurrah, no smell! It does seem to have a yellowish area in the middle, but no redness or heat around the burn site, just a bit of swelling still (which could be from the dressing which seemed to react on my skin...
)
I'm going to try and leave it without a dressing tonight but wondered what to do about the dry patches that seem to be coming on the smaller, more healed burn. Do I need to be putting anything on that bit to keep it moist? That side seems to be closed up, it's just the bigger one that is still open.
