Can a child be immune to Chicken Pox?

My 2 year old son has been around other children who have chicken pox whilst at his childminders. However, he has not had any symptoms of Chicken Pox himself. I am wondering if he is somehow immune to Chicken Pox without having had it himself? Or has he just been lucky so far?
Thanks.

Lucky.
Ds went unscathed through two epidemics at his nursery, then caught it the third year.
But he probably has a good immune system

Lucky. He will catch it at some point! Ds has come through several chickenpox epidemics unscathed but finally caught it a few weeks ago - it had been going round nursery since January. Pain in the bum while he had it but good that he won't catch it again, IYSWIM.

CP going round here at the moment and there are still some children who stubbornly refuse to catch it, to their mums' despair He'll get it eventually.

Thanks for that , I thought he was very lucky to not have caught it. I guess it's just wait and see when he does finally catch it.

CP went round DS nursery last year...he avoided it. This year in reception he has been a spot free island in a sea of chicken pox..all his closest friends have had it but he has yet to get it. Surprising really cos he picks up every other virus you can imagine very easily! I keep checking him for spots but nothing so far

I never caught it when I was a kid even though all my friends had it and my brother. In fact my brother had measles, mumps, chicken pox and scarlet fever and all I ever got was rubella.

When I was preg I was paranoid about catching it but when I had a test after being in contact with a child with chicken pox the test said I'd developed natural immunity! so it is possible I guess, although quite rare.

Hmmmm, I guess I won't know until he gets it... or doesn't. Bless him.

MY es didn't catch it until his first year in big school, and had certainly been around cp before, my m/s got it aged 3, after also not catching it for several outbreaks and he then gave it to his 21m younger bro...!
However you can devellope immunity without ever actually experiencing any symptoms...

BettySpaghetti · 12/03/2007 12:29

I didn't get it until I was 19 despite my Mum doing what everyone did when I was little, took me to Chicken Pox "parties" !

I escpaed for all those years and then caught it off the children I was nannying for the summer before going to uni.

Indith · 12/03/2007 12:30

I've never had it, my sister did and even in 6th form college there was a bit if an outbreak so maybe it is possible.

stressteddy · 12/03/2007 12:31

I have had it in the last 2 weeks!! My mum didn't tell me I hadn't had it as a child. I felt like a 3 year old covered in spots!! My son hasn't had it though (23 months) and he has been exposed to it a lot via me!! There's still time I suppose

anniebear · 12/03/2007 12:39

Mt 2 havent had it yet, 5 and a half and in yr 1

I had it at 21,was horrible
