dont think u can as ive never had it but its inflammed and if u dont get it treated..it will cause an infection - A BAD one!

liath · 08/03/2007 08:40

Lots of antiseptic gargles. If the pain becomes much worse esp if it's one side only and you can't swallow it may have formed an abcess and will need drained. It can settle without antibiotics but you do run the risk of it turning into an abcess.

I thought most tonsilitis is viral so antibiotics don't touch it anyway.

Biglips · 08/03/2007 08:49

oh right....
same here as i was on antib for a month!!! as one infection after the other...ended up on 1500mg A DAY antib cos of sinus infection.

LOOKING BACK AT MY TONCILITUS IT WAS SO SO PAINFUL IF IT TAKES THE ANTIBIOTICS TO GET RID OF IT I WOULD JUST DO IT! I REMEMBER TAKING ONE COURSE OF THEM AND IT WASNT ENOUGH. HAD TO HAVE ANOTHER COURSE AS CAME BACK SO BAD I REMEMBER BEING IN TEARS WITH PAIN. COULDNT EVEN SWALLOW SALIVA AT ONE POINT AND WAS SPITTING IT IN SINK. I HAD IT FOUR TIMES I THINK AND THEY SAID ONCE MORE AND I WOULD HAVE TO THINK ABOUT HAVING THEM OUT. MUST HAVE BEEN RUN DOWN OR SOMETHING AS I HAVNT HAD ANY PROBLEM FOR A LONG WHILE NOW. RELIEF!!!!

I have become resistant to penicillin because of taking it so often for tonsilitis. I now have to have some heavy duty combination of two different antibiotics to get rid of it! If you keep getting it pester your dr for a referal. I did and it finally worked after about 5 years of getting it every couple of months. I saw the consultant and he said most adults will get tonsilitis over and over again once they have had it once and the only cure is removal. I am now having mine out after I have had my baby and stopping bfing.

ScottishThistle · 08/03/2007 10:03

After recurrant tonsillitis (5/6 times a year) I eventually decided to have mine removed at 18...It's by far the best thing I've ever done, excessive antibiotics as a child affected my immune system.

hollyandalice · 08/03/2007 10:06

Scottishthistle was it a hideous op? The dr said it is horrible for adults. Is the pain as bad as childbirth?

ScottishThistle · 09/03/2007 19:52

Do you want me to tell you the truth???

It was awful but I've had 16yrs tonsillitis free which makes it worth the pain to be honest!

moogyboobles · 12/03/2007 00:35

Yes, I get tonsillits at least 4 times a year...used to be more like 10 times a year in my teens.
I never take the antibiotics anymore (well not in the past 5 years), i've noticed no difference in the time it takes to better and get it less often.
It is my weak spot though, I get run down and that's when I get it. Ever since I had glandular fever.
Are you dairy intolerant at all?
